Job description
At the Sun Valley Kitchen + Community Center, we are dedicated to providing engaging and educational experiences for children that celebrate the rich cultural diversity of our community. Our kids' cooking classes aim to introduce children to a variety of cuisines, emphasizing hands-on, experiential learning with a focus on nutrition. Our goal is to create a fun, dynamic environment where kids can develop their cooking skills, learn about healthy eating, and appreciate different cultural flavors.
Position Overview: We are seeking a passionate and energetic Kids Cooking Class Instructor to lead our weekly cooking classes. The ideal candidate will have a love for teaching children, a strong understanding of nutrition, and the ability to create engaging, fast-paced lessons. The classes cater to children in 3rd-5th grade, with an average of 5-10 participants each week. We have weekly classes operating on Saturday from 1:00-3:00 PM.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and conduct weekly cooking classes that are fun, engaging, and culturally inclusive.
- Develop recipes that incorporate a variety of cultures, highlighting the diversity of Sun Valley.
- Ensure that all classes are hands-on, with children actively participating in the cooking process.
- Teach basic cooking skills, kitchen safety, and the importance of nutrition in a lively, engaging manner.
- Create lesson plans that are experiential and avoid slow-paced activities, keeping children engaged and excited.
- Manage the classroom environment to ensure a positive and safe experience for all participants.
- Maintain a clean and organized kitchen space before, during, and after classes.
- Provide feedback and encouragement to students, fostering a supportive and fun learning atmosphere.
- Communicate effectively with parents and guardians about their children's progress and upcoming class activities.
Qualifications:
- Experience teaching or working with children, preferably in a cooking or educational setting.
- Strong knowledge of nutrition and healthy eating habits.
- Ability to create and adapt recipes to suit a variety of cultural tastes and dietary needs.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Organizational skills and the ability to manage a classroom of young children.
- Patience, creativity, and a passion for teaching children.
- Basic culinary skills and knowledge of kitchen safety practices.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification in nutrition or a related field.
- Culinary training or professional cooking experience.
- Experience working in a culturally diverse environment.
- Experience working with kids
- Bilingual skills
Compensation:
The Kids Cooking Class Instructor will be compensated $100 per class, plus reimbursement for groceries.
