At Stone Bank Farm Market, we believe in knowing where our food comes from, shaking hands with the people who grow it, and honoring the land we live on. Our farm and market are located on a 3 acre property in Stone Bank, Wisconsin where we provide fresh produce, dairy products, poultry, pork, and organic grass-fed beef as well as a wide variety of artisanal foods in our year-round market. 
 

The farm is dedicated to producing delicious, high quality, organically-grown vegetables, herbs and flowers on a half-acre of land that includes raised vegetable beds, field beds and greenhouses. We take great pride in using sustainable growing practices in our gardens and the 75 acres of preserved farmland surrounding our property where we raise beef cattle, pigs and sheep. 

Job description


Position Overview:

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Farm Manager to lead the operations of our small-scale organic vegetable farm starting in the 2024 season. As the Farm Manager, you will play a vital role in ensuring the success of our farm by overseeing day-to-day operations, planning for the future, and utilizing sustainable agricultural practices. Your leadership skills, strong work ethic and passion for organic farming will contribute to the growth and prosperity of our farm.


Responsibilities:


Crop Production:

  • Manage and participate in all aspects of crop production, including planting, cultivating, harvesting and packaging.
  • Develop daily and weekly farm plans.
  • Develop annual crop plans. 
  • Utilize regenerative agriculture practices such as crop rotation and cover crops to maintain soil health and prevent pests and diseases.
  • Monitor potential threats to crop production such as weather conditions, pest infestations, irrigation problems, etc. and adjust practices as needed to optimize crop yields and quality.
  • Maintain accurate records of crop yields, expenses, labor hours, and other relevant farm data.

Communication and Team Management:

  • Manage a team of 3 farm workers and 2-4 volunteers.
  • Create farm worker schedules, modifying as needed to meet farm needs.
  • Train and supervise farm workers, ensuring efficient and productive teamwork.
  • Delegate tasks, provide guidance, and conduct regular performance evaluations to maintain a motivated and skilled workforce.
  • Foster a positive, collaborative work environment that promotes communication and respect.
  • Communicate regularly with heads of the Market and Kitchen.

Farm Maintenance:

  • Maintain farm infrastructure, equipment, and facilities in proper working condition.
  • Organize and oversee repairs, maintenance, and upgrades as necessary to ensure safe and efficient operations.

Sustainability and Education:

  • Explore opportunities to improve farm practices and reduce environmental impact.
  • Develop initiatives to educate our customers and the community on sustainable farming.


Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years experience in organic, no-till farming and crop production, preferably in a managerial or supervisory role.
  • Strong knowledge of organic farming principles, sustainable agriculture, and pest/disease management.
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage a diverse team.
  • Ability to effectively solve problems and make decisions in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for maintaining records and managing resources.
  • Clear communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor and work outdoors in various weather conditions.

The workload will average approximately 40 hours/week over the year, but weekly averages will vary with longer hours during peak season between May-Sept and shorter in the off-season.
