Job description
The Position:
The Gleaning Coordinator (GC) position is essential to the work of Long Table Harvest and is responsible for running all on-the-ground logistics of the Gleaning Program. The GC is on the road Mondays and Tuesdays, weekly from May through November, picking up seedlings and a variety of foodstuffs, which are then immediately disbursed to our partner distribution sites throughout Columiba, Dutchess and Greene Counties. Additional duties include sporadic in-field fruit gleaning with volunteers, as well as some minimal spring and winter administrative duties.
Responsibilities:
- Maintaining relationships and managing communications with 40+ farms and 30+ distribution sites on a weekly basis
- Taking stock of food and seedling donations, and thinking ahead to ensure all distribution sites are receiving an adequate amount of food based of their needs and preferences
- Driving a large cargo van safely and securely approximately 8-10 hours per day
- Keeping records of pounds of food received by type and inputting into our online database bi-weekly
- Twice weekly social media posts to recap work done on Mondays and Tuesdays
- Maintaining cargo van including on-time oil changes, any repairs that are needed, and annual state inspection
Desired Qualifications:
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- Exceptional organization and communication skills
- Valid driver’s license and comfort driving a large cargo van long distances
- Good record keeping ability
- Thoughtful and forward thinking / good at problem solving
- Knowledge of local foodshed and familiarity with produce / farms / farming
- Self-starter with good initiative and ability to work independently
Start Date, Schedule and Compensation:
Start Date: Monday, April 21st, 2025
Approximate Schedule:
- Mondays May to mid-June from around 9am to 4pm
- Mondays and Tuesdays mid-June through November from around 7/8am to 4:30pm
- There are a few federal holidays that fall on a Monday and the schedule is adjusted for delivery solely on Tuesdays those weeks.
- Outreach via text on Sunday and Monday evenings to farms about picking up produce the following days and creating the weekly delivery route / schedule
- There are additional hours for in-field gleaning which vary based on farm availability from August - October as well as flexible hours devoted to social media posting and data input.
Compensation:
Compensation starts at $28/hour with an increase of $2/hour for the second season, plus produce and end of season bonus. Work hours are around 18-22 hours a week. We will prioritize candidates who are willing to commit to at least two full seasons, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
