Company description
Little Big Farm is a 3 acre market farm on 25 beautiful acres in Olympia, Washington.
We grow and direct market a diverse array of fresh mixed vegetables and specialize in our much-loved salad mix, bunched greens, fresh roots, and greenhouse crops. We offer this bounty through Farmers Markets in Seattle and Olympia, as well as at the Olympia Food Co-op, local restaurants, and Community Supported Agriculture.
The littleness of Little Big is held close to us. By farming on such a small-scale, and utilizing appropriate-scale tools and techniques, our farm is able to produce exceptionally high yields and profitability per acre with an accountability that ensures quality.
Job description
This position is full time. Four days a week on farm, with one day a week as a Farmers Market Lead at our booth at the Olympia Farmers Market.
Applicants should desire to work on a small-scale, high production vegetable farm. You must be in good physical and mental condition, with the ability to regularly lift 50+ pounds and work consecutive 8+ hour days on your feet, using your body. Sometimes this means working in the rain and wind, other times it means hot, dry, and sunny — you will work in it all. Ideal candidates are passionate about food, vegetables, being outside, working hard. You must be able to work efficiently alone and in a team as your days will almost always encompass both types of work. Repetitive tasks cannot drive you crazy. We live for the hustle and take pride in the skill and craftsmanship needed to do the job well. To do well on our farm, you must work quickly and efficiently, be detail oriented, communicate thoughtfully and take pride in the farm’s success. You will need to be able to listen, follow directions, and learn. We want our employees to see the beauty and importance of our work and to find the humor in the hard parts. Farming is not easy, but it is overwhelmingly beautiful and relentlessly gratifying.
Because this position includes farmers market work and is not only a field crew position, we are looking for a reliable and personable applicant to represent our business in our community. You must have an eye for presentation and be able to set up, maintain, and breakdown an abundant market display. You must be positive, patient, engaging, and helpful with customers, fellow vendors, and market staff. You must be able to accurately and quickly do simple math and make change for customers. Knowledge of vegetables, passion for food, and previous customers service experience desired. This is a fast paced but highly rewarding job. Farmers market customers are the best customers. Please see our website to learn more about the farm, the position, and how to apply.
