Job description
Farm Market Retail Sales Position:
We are a busy brick & mortar farm market that sells our own USDA certified organic produce from our farm alongside a tailored selection of grocery products. Our market is expanding this year and we are looking to bring on additional staff.
This is a great position for those with previous restaurant experience who love an active and social work environment (and maybe don't want to work those late nights!) OR those with previous experience selling at outdoor farmer's markets (and want the luxury of working indoors!)
The retail sales position is fast paced and involves physically lifting large boxes of produce; sorting, weighing and packing produce for sale in the market (example: bagging fresh cut salad mix/ sorting heirloom tomatoes); maintaining the displays of produce & grocery products throughout the store and ringing up customers at the register. Check out our market on IG: @heartyrootsmarket
Job Responsibilities:
- Opening the market: stocking produce, vegetable prep cleaning, stocking shelves and fridges, pricing new products. Must be able to lift up to 50 lb. boxes, pack/unload boxes of produce for market set-up.
- Interacting with our customers and CSA members, providing excellent customer service. A genuine interest in talking to the public about our products. Good communication skills & customer service skills are a must!
- Must work well with others - we work as a team in order to take care of all the daily operations of running the market. As a member of the market retail staff you will work alongside our market manager, retail staff and farm crew.
- Maintain knowledge of seasonal produce along with learning about the additional products we sell, most of which are sourced from local farms in the Northeast.
- Ringing up customers on the register, operating a point of sales system, handling cash.
- Able to prioritize keeping the store clean, looking fresh and fully stocked at all times. Create and maintain attractive signage and displays in the market.
- Accept deliveries throughout the day and keep the back stock walk-in cooler and inventory storage areas clean & organized.
- Closing the market: putting away/storing fresh produce in our walk-in cooler at the end of the day. End of day cleaning of the store including dusting, sweeping, and mopping. Light restocking of inventory for the next day, taking note of any low inventory.
The Ideal Candidate:
Our ideal person is someone who has a genuine interest in food & farming; enjoys an active, social work environment; and can work well with others in a team setting.
- 1 season of farming/and or farmers market experience or 1 year of experience in retail sales.
- Interest in learning about the community of farms and makers in the Hudson Valley.
- An excellent communicator who enjoys engaging with customers and answering questions about produce, recipe suggestions, etc.
Schedule:
Hours: Our Market is open Monday–Saturdays 10am–6pm & Sunday 10am–4pm. Opening shifts are from 9-5pm / Closing shifts are from 11-7pm or 1-7pm. Availability to work at least one closing shift is required for current applicants.
Option for full-time or part-time hours. We are open 7 days a week and year round. (Employment through the winter months).
Compensation:
- Pay starts at $18/hour, or more for those with previous experience.
- Free organic produce from the farm and a 30% employee discount in our farm store.
- Workers' Compensation, Unemployment Insurance, Paid Family Leave and Paid Sick Leave.
