Company description
Piece by Piece Farm is an 8 acre, certified organic vegetable farm located on a former dairy farm in the Chehalis River Valley in Rochester, Washington. We sell our produce at area farmers markets, the Olympia Food Co-op and the SW Washington Grower's Co-op. We are dedicated to providing our local community with high quality produce that is grown in a way that respects both the people who grow it and the land it is grown on.
Job description
Most days on the farm start with harvest, including the washing and packing of produce. The rest of the day is devoted to farm projects such as delivering produce, trellising/pruning, weeding and transplanting. Early in the season more time is spent on projects and later in the season harvest lasts into the afternoon.
Everyone has a set schedule for the season. Typically full-time positions work four or five days in a row. People interested in a part-time position must be able to commit to three days a week. We start at 7:00 or 7:30 and work an eight hour day. Market days are Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday and are typically longer than eight hours. We are open to alternative schedules and try to be as flexible as possible. Regardless of your schedule you must be able to show up on time and be dependable. We need people who are available to start in March, but will continue hiring through June as the season ramps up. We prefer to employ people who are able to work into October or November and there is some potential part-time winter work available.
This job is physically demanding. You must be able to lift 40 pounds repeatedly, spend long periods of time bent over, squatting and kneeling in all weather conditions.
You should enjoy working in a team, but also be able to stay focused and motivated when working independently.
We are quality driven and expect you to be as well. We feel the quality of our produce, both in flavor and appearance, is directly related to the success we have as a farm.
If you are interested in a farmer's market shift you must be able to do mental math and enjoy engaging with customers about food and cooking.
For someone who enjoys physical work and being outside, farming can be a lot of fun. It can also be tedious and a good attitude and sense of humor are essential. If you don't enjoy hard work and hustling you won't enjoy farming. When we began farming it opened up a whole new world to both of us. It is exhausting, but also incredibly rewarding. We want to surround ourselves with people who think the work will be fulfilling and who are passionate about local food systems.
The farm is not accessible by public transport and having reliable transportation is essential.
Previous farming experience is valued, but not necessary.
