Recent beneficiary of the Michelin Green Star, Rigor Hill Farm is a regeneratively-run, collectively-managed commercial farmstead in Ghent, NY, where “field and forest meet”. We provide high quality specialty and staple vegetables, herbs, cut flowers, tree and cane fruit and nuts, cultivated mushrooms, and wild foraged foods to our partners One White Street and Rigor Hill Market. The farm integrates 2-acres of market garden style no-till production of annual vegetables and flowers (including 1/2 acre under greenhouse and high tunnel), with perennial herb gardens, agroforestry modeled fruit and nut production and an expanding orchard.
Job description
The Perennial Food Program is an integrated, multi-story production system comprising more than 40 species of food bearing plants. From the tallest canopy trees down to the smallest herb and tuber, the program is meant to showcase the vast possibilities at the cutting edge of perennial agriculture in the Northeast US. This position’s sphere of work will primarily be to assist the perennial program manager in the establishment, management, maintenance and harvest of the farm’s perennial cropping systems: fruit and nut trees, berries, herbs, and herbaceous perennials. Woodland mushroom cultivation and limited foraging are also part of the weekly flow.
Responsibilities:
-Maintaining perennial production spaces with the farm team as an integrated component of the farm’s overall food production system
-Establishing expanded perennial plantings on the farm and orchard landscape
-Establishing pollinator habitats and other wild, passively supportive habitats
-Creating and improving wildcrafted “production” spaces
-Operating log grown mushroom operation
-Care of crop trees and perennial beds including mowing, weed wacking and hand weeding.
Skills & Qualifications:
-Experience working in a commercial farm or orchard setting(bonus points for regenerative or holistic management)
-Familiarity with farm machinery including tractors, chainsaws, and power tools (additional safety training provided, so proficiency, not expertise, is required)
-Commitment to continual learning
-Willingness to both receive as well as give feedback constructively and professionally
-Comfortable performing demanding and repetitive physical labor, including lifting 50+ pounds safely and repeatedly and working effectively in all weather conditions
Compensation
this position is: hourly, varies DOE, $18.00 - $22.00
