Company description
Good Agriculture is an early-stage, venture-backed start-up supporting current & future regenerative farmers with business services so they can do what they do best: produce food that regenerates ecosystems and nourishes people. We are scaling the regenerative agriculture revolution, and our team makes an impact on our food system and our environment every day. We support 60+ farmers with our financial management services – you will be the third member of our financial management team.
Job description
We are seeking a detail-oriented and tech-savvy CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or EA (Enrolled Agent) to launch our tax filing service for farmers and be a part of our monthly bookkeeping & financial management team. Here’s what’s unique about this position: we’re actively building financial management software so we can support more farmers at affordable prices, and we’re looking for someone who’s excited to help us test out new technology, adapt their processes each month to what the tech can and cannot do, and help us identify additional opportunities to serve farmers better.
Responsibilities include:
1) Tax filings for farmers: We currently do not prepare or file taxes for farmers, but we plan to offer this service for the 2024 tax year. Because the vast majority of our customers are LLCs, this means being able to file the farm’s taxes AND personal taxes. You must be comfortable doing this independently today. We will be starting with simple tax situations only (think Schedule F + Form 4562 for a handful of assets + a spouse’s W-2 – we will continue to work with our ag CPA firm partners for complex tax situations).
2) Bookkeeping and financial management for farmers: This includes a range of responsibilities ranging from simple monthly & annual bookkeeping to more complex financial management including reporting, projections, and inventory tracking.
3) Tech team support and tech implementation: Includes ideating opportunities to automate processes and improve farmer experience, testing prototypes and beta versions of software, providing feedback to the tech team, and implementing tech into business processes as it’s ready
4) [Optional] Customer service for our farmer customers: This includes collaborating with the farmer directly (and being able to communicate complex financial topics in an easily-understandable way), providing fast service, and collaborating with farmer partners like CPA firms and banks. For people more interested in staying internal-facing, we can adapt the role to be more of a “tax & finance expert” track than a “farmer-facing account executive” track.
Our ideal candidate has the following characteristics. Good Agriculture encourages you to apply even if you do not meet all of these characteristics but are excited to develop them:
-Fluent customer service skills and experience working directly with customers
-Experience handling both cash and accrual accounting
Proficiency in Xero and QuickBooks Online: handling bank statements, bank feed connections, reconciling bank accounts, journal entries, and reporting.
-Strong Excel/Google Sheets skills, including general data organization, pivot tables, Index/Match, and ability to learn and combine advanced formulas
-Understanding of key accounting principles, including revenue, cost of goods sold (COGS), operating expenses (OPEX), assets, liabilities, and equity
-Ability to identify and resolve discrepancies in bank reconciliations, financial statements, and payment processing records.
-Experience tracking loan balances, allocating principal vs. interest, and maintaining depreciation schedules.
-Experience managing complex farm inventory
Good Agriculture is committed to creating an environment of shared prosperity, regeneration for our people as well as the environment, trust and openness, and continuous improvement in service to regenerative farmers. We are seeking the following characteristics in all candidates:
-Experience working in the agriculture tax space – you must be comfortable preparing and filing simple farm + personal tax returns independently
-Detail-oriented problem-solver who is stubborn about tracking down discrepancies and ensuring accurate financial data
-Passion for regenerative agriculture, sustainability, fighting climate change, resilient food systems, and/or developing rural economies -Excitement to learn from feedback, wrestle with challenging problems, and grow
-Excellent team player abilities including open communication, enthusiasm to help when needed, and a strong sense of integrity
Commitment to our values and to cultivating those values as the team grows
This will be either a full-time or part-time position based in the United States. Good Agriculture offers an excellent company culture, competitive compensation with monthly performance bonuses, the opportunity for equity, a full benefits package for W-2 employees, and discounts on our customers’ products.
