Job description
We have two positions that work alternating days. The Chef and Food Systems Teacher (the “Chef/Teacher”) creates and sources monthly menus for a school community of 130 children, ages 3 months to 12 years old, and their teachers. The school emphasizes local, organic ingredients whenever possible. This individual also works with elementary students and faculty to explore local food systems and plan and execute several annual family lunches, which students plan, purchase, prepare, and serve. Additionally, the Chef/Teacher supports age-appropriate learning about foodways in classrooms, partnering with teachers to celebrate holidays and teach culinary skills.
The Chef/Teacher supervises and guides a Line Cook who works two days per week, following the Chef’s menus, doing prep, lunch service, and cleanup.
Compensation for the Chef/Teacher includes a salary range of $45,000-$50,000 for the year-round position, plus benefits (health, dental, 401k, 6 weeks paid time off, and 10 sick/personal days). Hours are 6 am-2:30 pm, Monday-Friday. There are minimal off-hour commitments, which are scheduled well in advance.
Compensation for the Line Cook includes a salary of $35,568-$40,000 for the year-round position. This role is not eligible for benefits. Hours are 6 am-2:30 pm. There are minimal off-hour commitments, which are scheduled well in advance.
Qualifications for Chef/Teacher: Qualified candidates must possess a high school diploma (college degree preferred) and have 3-5 years of relevant experience in a kitchen with responsibility for ordering and sourcing. Budget management experience is critical for this role. He or she must have strong communication skills and fluency in English. The position requires exceptional organizational abilities, attention to detail, and unwavering follow through. Serve Safe or equivalent is required.
Qualifications for Line Cook: Qualified candidates must possess a high school diploma and have 2-5 years of relevant experience in a commercial kitchen. Fluency in English is required. Serve Safe or equivalent is required.
Chef/Teacher responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Planning monthly menus that reflect healthy, organic lunches for a range of ages and appetites
Sourcing ingredients through purveyors such as Baldor and Chefs’ Warehouse as well as local growers
Attending to student allergy and dietary restrictions as required; communicating with parents as needed
Providing lunch service three days per week
Supervising a Line Cook who covers the other two days
Ensuring compliance with relevant Boston municipal regulations, including cleanliness, food safety, and fire safety
Ensuring compliance with relevant Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) requirements
Collaborating closely with colleagues to teach about food systems and foodways
Managing the kitchen budget in partnership with the Head of School and bookkeeper
Collaborating with the Head of School to design and implement occasional admission and parent events such as coffee mornings and open houses
Line Cook responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Preparing and serving lunches based on the Chef’s menus
Preparing ingredients as required
Attending to student allergy and dietary restrictions as required
Providing lunch service two days per week
Compliance with relevant Boston municipal regulations, including cleanliness, food safety, and fire safety
Compliance with relevant Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) requirements
Collaborating with the staff to implement occasional admission and parent events such as coffee mornings and open houses
