The Alaska Farmers Market Association (AFMA) is seeking a motivated and passionate Executive Director to lead the organization in fulfilling its mission of strengthening Alaska’s farmers markets and supporting a resilient local food system.
Alaska Farmers Market Association (AFMA) is a small 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that aims to improve the well-being of Alaskans through resources and grant opportunities for Alaska’s agricultural community. AFMA seeks to connect farmers to their customers by supporting a statewide network of farmers, market managers, farm stands, CSAs, food hubs, vendors, and local food enthusiasts.

Job description
Position Summary: Executive Director
The Executive Director will provide leadership, guide the development and execution of programs, support the organization’s financial sustainability, and serve as the primary representative of AFMA in a range of public, private, and community settings.
Working in close collaboration with the Board of Directors, member markets, farmers, and partner organizations, the Executive Director will foster a culture of innovation, inclusivity, and shared purpose. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who thrives in a dynamic environment and brings strategic thinking to the design, funding, and implementation of programs that improve food access and support the growth of Alaska’s local food economy.
Responsibilities:
Serve as the primary liaison between the AFMA Board of Directors and the community AFMA serves, ensuring alignment between the organization’s strategic direction and day-to-day operations.
Lead grant research and secure funding from a variety of sources, including public and private donors, grants, and philanthropic opportunities.
Responsible for securing funds for programs through a diverse range of funding sources, including public and private donors, grants, and other philanthropic opportunities
Oversee the fiscal health of the organization, including budget development and management, as well as the management of restricted funds, and light bookkeeping tasks.
Lead communication and outreach efforts to member markets, keeping them informed and supported.
Collect annual data from member markets and provide technical assistance to member markets, offering guidance and resources to ensure their success and sustainability.
Develop and strengthen partnerships with community organizations, governmental entities, and farmers markets to enhance AFMA’s programs.
Advocate on behalf of local farmers markets and food systems to ensure a local food future that is equitable, sustainable, and community driven.
Qualifications:
Strong understanding of program management, grant compliance, and fundraising strategies.
Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage diverse audiences and stakeholders.
Experience with budgeting, financial management, and basic non-profit accounting practices.
Knowledge of the Alaska food system, farmers markets, and local agriculture.

Ability to work independently and unsupervised in a dynamic environment.
