At Smiling Hill Farm, the milk from our dairy herd is processed right on the farm. The products purchased at the farm never leave the farm until purchased by a consumer.
Job description
Smiling Hill Farm is looking to hire a cheesemaker for an immediate opening. Cheesemaking is a very rewarding, yet very physically demanding work. The right candidate will be an individual who has an interest in local agriculture and artisanal crafted products, a strong work ethic, and high attention to detail.
Daily tasks are responsibilities include but are not limited to:
· Cleaning and sanitation of all necessary vessels, instruments, moulds, and dishes before and after each use.
· Measuring milk volume, calculating and adding appropriate culture weight.
· Calculating and adding appropriate rennet volume.
· Cutting, cooking, and ladling curds into corresponding moulds.
· Monitoring and upkeep of various styles of actively aging and ripening cheeses.
· Cutting and packaging of all product lines.
· Routine cleaning of all production and aging spaces, drains, walls, and equipment.
To be a successful cheesemaker you will need to process the following skills:
· Work while standing in hot (90F), cool (38-55F), and humid (>90%) environments for extended periods of time.
· Bend over, knee, and squat repeatedly throughout the day.
· Lift and safely maneuver up to 50lbs.
· Go up and down stairs, around corners, over and around obstacles, turn on light switches, and open doors while carrying objects of various size.
· Uncompromising cleanliness, sanitation, and food safety habits.
· Work safely with and around concentrated cleaning chemicals.
· Follow written and verbal directions.
· Strong verbal and written communication skills.
· Maintain a positive attitude during tiring shifts.
· Meticulous and legible record keeping.
· Ability to multitask and efficiently assign task priority.
· Work productively and efficiently both independently and part of a team.
· Manual dexterity.
· Basic computer skills and working knowledge of Outlook, Word, and Excel.
While not required, work experience in or related to dairy, food, or beverage processing and/or manufacturing would be a plus.
Compensation
this position is: hourly, $15-20/hr
