Job description
JOB OVERVIEW
The Field Lead plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and productivity of the farm plots. They work closely with the Farm Manager to ensure that all tasks, processes, and systems—especially urgent and high-priority ones—are properly established, implemented, and maintained. The Field Lead is primarily responsible for ensuring the completion of daily field operations. They are able to identify urgent tasks and make sure that all necessary work is carried out efficiently. Key responsibilities include overseeing irrigation, weed and pest management, fertilizing, mulching, bed turnover, monitoring crop yields, and general plot maintenance. This role requires strong attention to detail, clear communication, solid organizational skills, and the ability to cultivate a positive and productive team environment.
Responsibilities:
1. Field Maintenance
- Monitor and maintain the health of crops and soil in all growing beds.
- Oversee routine tasks such as watering, weeding, fertilizing, and mulching.
- Manage bed turnover and preparation, including:
Tarping (solarizing) and untarping
- Adding compost and raking beds
- Preparing and planting new crop
- Ensure seeding is completed on schedule and follow up on plant development.
- Perform irrigation system upgrades, adjustments, and repairs as needed.
- Carry out additional field tasks, such as: Building trellises and sandbags, Staking, training, and pruning plants
2. Team Coordination
- Ensures all seeding is done on time to ensure that transplanting and direct seeding is on schedule.
- Transport plants from the nursery to the field for transplanting.
- Provide guidance, training, and support to field team members.
- Collaborate with the team to ensure all work is completed efficiently and meets farm standards.
3. Communication
- Regularly report on field conditions, progress, and any challenges.
- Share feedback on operations and suggest improvements to enhance workflow and productivity.
4. Garden Maintenance and Reporting
- Monitor and report on the condition of garden beds, crop yields, and any pest-related issues.
- Notify the team when supplies are running low.
- Report broken tools or when equipment needs repair or replacement.
- Assist with composting, brewing organic fertilizers, and applying soil amendments to support soil health.
5. Prioritizing Safety and Teamwork
- Ensure all fieldworkers follows safety protocols to maintain a safe and efficient working environment.
- Promote teamwork while upholding best practices on the farm.
6. Problem-Solving and Communication
- Identify issues such as crop health problems, pest outbreaks, or equipment malfunctions.
- Communicate promptly with the Farm Manager when issues arise.
- Help implement corrective actions and preventive solutions as needed.
7. Training and Skill Development
- Continue learning to operate the tractor and Bobcat safely and effectively.
- Train new field staff on farming techniques and operational procedures.
- Encourage continuous learning and skill development across the team.
Required Qualifications
Farming experience is a must (minimum 1–2 years of hands-on field work).
Proven ability to prioritize tasks and think quickly in dynamic environments.
Strong multitasking skills with the ability to complete tasks efficiently and independently.
Ability to identify crop health and pest issues and respond appropriately.
Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions and performing physical labor.
Effective verbal communication and team coordination skills.
Solid understanding of basic farm operations: irrigation, composting, planting, and bed turnover.
Commitment to following safety protocols and promoting a positive team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience leading or training field teams in a farm or garden setting.
Familiarity with organic soil amendments, compost brewing, and pest management techniques.
Hands-on experience operating farm equipment such as tractors and Bobcats.
Basic mechanical skills for tool and irrigation system repairs.
Interest in sustainable agriculture and continuous learning in farming practices.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift 50lbs

Withstand varying and extreme weather conditions
Endure prolonged periods of squatting, kneeling, standing and walking
Compensation
this position is: hourly, $20/hr +
