The mission of Wakeman Town Farm is to serve the community as an educational demonstration center for sustainable living. The Farm is a model facility created to educate the community with the local healthy food production, responsible land stewardship, sustainable practices and community service. Activities include educational workshops, student internships, after-school environmental clubs, children’s summer camp programs, growing fruits and vegetables, animal husbandry, and provides a seasonal weekly farmstand.
Job description
Position: Wakeman Town Farm Gardens Manager
Start Date: Immediate
Job Type: Hourly/Part-time seasonal
Pay: Hourly pay depends on experience
Role: The Farm is seeking a part-time gardens manager and farmstand coordinator with broad knowledge and solid experience in organic vegetable & flower gardening. This position coordinated with many people on the farm to grow everything as well as provide an exciting and positive experience for guests. This position works collaboratively with two other farmers and reports to the WTF Caretaker.
Schedule: Seasonal fluctuation (Sample Schedule below)
February through April: averaging 10 -15 hours per week - Seed starting, garden planning, farm administration. Maple syrup making.
May through September: averaging 20 - 30 hours per week - Gardens planting, maintenance, volunteer oversight, summer interns oversight, vegetable production for summer camps, cooking classes, and farmstand. Oversee seasonal weekly Saturday farmstand. Saturdays mandatory.
October through November: averaging 15 - 20 hours per week - Gardens maintenance, volunteer oversight, vegetable production for cooking classes and farmstand. Oversee seasonal weekly Saturday farmstand. Saturday Mandatory
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Garden manager will be responsible for all garden planning, prep, maintenance, harvesting, and composting
Pruning fruit trees, bushes, and other perrennial plants
Landscaping and keeping the property tidy
Direct, oversee, and educate volunteers and interns performing gardening chores
Coordinate and oversee seasonal weekly Saturday farmstand, June through October
Collaborate with Education, Animal, Kitchen, and Committee members
Utilize the volunteer portal to track and reach out to volunteers
Qualifications:
Strong working knowledge of organic agriculture
Solid horticultural knowledge
Passionate about organic farming and sustainable lifestyle
Strong communication skills
Attention to detail
Self-starter who monitors garden conditions and initiates actions
Works well with others of all ages and abilities
Good sense of humor and positive disposition
Ability to lift 50lbs
Ability to work in various weather conditions (ie. sun/cold/heat/rain exposure)
Compensation
this position is: hourly, $20/hr +
