Specialty Cheese Buyer
JOB DESCRIPTION
OVERVIEW: Riverwards Produce is a group of produce focused markets in Philadelphia. This position will primarily operate out of the commissary kitchen in Port Richmond, Philadelphia.
The Specialty Cheese Buyer position at Riverwards Produce serves as the primary executor of the Prepared Foods Specialty Cheese program. They have a vast knowledge of cheese varieties and accoutrements. They are responsible for the preparation, packaging, and delivery of cut cheese for sale at Riverwards Produce Market. They coordinate frequently with the commissary and market teams to ensure proper product variance, aesthetic coherence, and protocol as it relates to the Specialty Cheese Program.
Most importantly, they’re responsible for timely, space-efficient, and movement-informed purchasing. They’re responsible for proper receiving, processing, and storage of all specialty cheese orders at the commissary.
Reports to: Commissary Manager
Responsibilities:
Coordinate the purchase and procurement of specialty cheeses according to producer and management-imposed deadlines
Adjust retail prices to keep them in line with the margins dictated by the costs
Maintain proper inventory of cut cheeses by visiting both stores to organize product selection and maintain quality control by utilizing self developed inventory management practices
Maintain proper pricing, labeling and dating of all cheeses cut in house
Maintain communication with Store and Department Managers to keep them informed of any updates or changes to the cheese program
Collaborate with the market teams to plan seasonal and rotating merchandising plans
Work with Commissary Manager and Commissary Supervisor to ensure all ingredients, packaging and supplies needed for production are ordered
Stand in for the Commissary Manager and/or the Commissary Supervisor when they are not present
Assist Commissary team with daily fulfillment of production inventory
Requirements:
Experience receiving, processing, and merchandising grocery in a retail setting
Ability to lift 50+ lbs and spend 8+ hours standing and walking up and down stairs
Passion for the principles of sustainable food and farming
Flexibility in scheduling, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
A diligent approach to safety and sanitation - ServSafe (or analogous) certification a plus
A team player with a willingness to jump in and help with all store tasks
Ability to roll with the punches of a rapidly growing start-up business
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Detail orientation and ability to communicate easily and often with team and managers
Experience receiving, processing, and/or merchandising specialty grocery in a retail setting
A positive attitude and an enthusiastic desire to provide storewide customer service
Working knowledge of local food makers
COMPENSATION: This position is full-time. Compensation begins at $18/hr. Riverwards Produce provides a 20% discount on all store products.
