Overview
The Operations Manager will oversee and be hands-on with the daily rescue and redistribution of donated food at the Wholesale Produce Market. In this position, you will manage a team of 10+ employees who are sorting produce donations, moving pallets of food, loading trucks, and coordinating the incoming and outgoing deliveries of food donations. This job is “reactionary” meaning the donation streams may change daily, and this position requires you to use critical thinking skills to ensure all donations find a suitable home, every day. You will report to the Sharing Excess Program Director and should be adept at team communication and management, strategic business planning, and relationship building. Day-to-day tasks include working directly with produce vendors to secure and assess the quality of donations, overseeing our team of warehouse associates, weighing and tracking food donations within our app, sorting through produce when necessary, engaging with volunteers, and allocating available donations to partner organizations. Please note this job requires you to be on your feet and will involve early mornings on-site at the market.
Key Responsibilities:
Report directly to the Program Director to ensure operations are on-time and running smoothly.
Maintain close-knit, positive relationships with produce vendors daily to secure donations and with recipients that we partner with.
Lead and supervise our team of warehouse associates and overall warehouse operations to maintain a positive and engaging work environment and clean, safe warehouse space.
Ensure accurate and timely inventory of all inbound and and stored surplus donations, within the refrigerated warehouse spaces.
Ensure a clean and safe working environment including training and coaching of all staff around safety and safe handling of produce
Oversight of equipment to ensure the needs of daily operations are met
Coordinate quality control checks on a daily basis to ensure efficient sorting of all inbound product and repacking of quality outgoing donations.
Weigh and track food donations in the SE app and inventory/tracking spreadsheets
Track the allocation of donations from vendor to specific recipients utilizing vendor donations data and established allocation processes.
Assist with volunteers on a daily and weekly basis.
Assist the warehouse associates with sorting produce as needed.
Support the director in additional activities related to strategic planning, and developing and launching new partners or initiatives
Qualifications:
3+ years experience managing a team in a warehouse environment. (in-person management strongly preferred; position is hands-on)
Strong leadership skills.
Comfortable communicating with a variety of stakeholders.
Comfortable handling forklifts, pallet jacks, etc. (Forklift certification is a plus)
Comfortable with data tracking and analysis
Must be able to lift 50 lb at one time
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the warehouse for extended periods (at least 8 hours per shift).
Capability to lift, carry, and maneuver pallets or containers weighing up to 50 lbs.
Ability to operate warehouse equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks.
Tolerance for working in varied temperatures, including refrigerated and ambient warehouse conditions.
Capability to perform repetitive tasks, including sorting, weighing, and organizing food items.
Detailed Requirements:
Adherence to all safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
Familiarity with food safety regulations and compliance standards relevant to food handling and warehouse operations including OSHA regulations
Effective time management skills to prioritize tasks and ensure timely completion of responsibilities.
Strong problem-solving abilities to adapt to changing circumstances and address operational challenges.
Proficiency in using digital tools and apps for tracking and managing food donations and inventory.
Proficiency in using general software (MS Word/Excel or Google Docs/Sheets) for administration
Compensation: Starting salary is market dependent with PTO, healthcare benefits, and 401k options.
