Position Summary
Chewonki seeks a dedicated and collaborative Farm Production Lead to help oversee our vibrant 26-acre farm and woodlot. From managing pastures, livestock, and gardens to supporting sustainable forestry and farm-based education, this position offers a chance to make a meaningful impact within a dynamic educational community.
Working closely with the Farm Manager, the Farm Production Lead supports the dual focus of the Chewonki farm – maintaining productive agricultural systems while teaching and mentoring students through daily farm work. The ideal candidate is an experienced grower and land steward who thrives in a community setting and enjoys sharing knowledge with youth and young adults.
Key Responsibilities
Assist with all aspects of garden and pasture management, livestock care, and sustainable forestry.
Collaborate with educational programs including the Maine Coast Semester, Camp Chewonki, and the Outdoor Classroom to lead farm-based learning experiences.
Support the integration of the farm with Dining Services to strengthen Chewonki’s food systems education.
Manage crop planning, compost, post-harvest handling, and soil health.
Participate fully in Chewonki’s residential community life.
Qualifications
Supervisory experience on a diversified, sustainable farm.
Experience teaching or mentoring youth in a farm or outdoor education setting.
Knowledge of vegetable production and animal husbandry (sheep, pigs, turkeys, and/or chickens).
Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to operate tractors and equipment.
Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
Residential Expectations
This is a residential position. The Farm Production Lead is provided with shared on-campus housing as an integral part of their role.
Compensation
this position is: salaried, $43,950 - $50,000
