Job Title: Assistant to the Lead Grind Staff
Location: MeatWorks, a Non-Profit Slaughterhouse & Meat Processing Plant
Operated by: The Livestock Institute of Southern New England
Reports To: Lead Grind Staff, Lead Cutter, Operations Manager
Position Overview:
The Assistant to the Lead Grind Staff is a vital role within the MeatWorks team, providing support to the Lead Grind Staff in all aspects of meat grinding, sausage production, and order fulfillment. This position includes handling raw meat trimmings, operating grinding and packaging equipment, and assisting with the production of ground meats such as beef, pork, lamb, and goat. The Assistant will ensure all work is completed in adherence to USDA standards for safety, quality, and hygiene, while contributing to the timely fulfillment of orders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Meat Grinding & Processing Support:
- Assist the Lead Grind Staff in operating grinding equipment, hoists, and packers for processing meat trimmings from producers' orders.
- Support the grinding of various meats (beef, pork, lamb, goat) to meet required specifications and maintain product consistency.
- Assist in the preparation and mixing of ground meats, including making sausage, hamburgers, and other value-added products under the guidance of the Lead Grind Staff.
- Help with measuring and mixing spices and other ingredients for sausage production, following recipes and USDA guidelines.
2. Handling & Storing Products:
- Assist in handling raw meat trimmings and ground meat safely, ensuring all products are properly stored and labeled according to USDA standards.
- Ensure proper storage of ground products at safe temperatures to prevent contamination.
- Help maintain accurate inventory records of products and ingredients used in the grinding process.
3. Order Fulfillment:
- Support the fulfillment of orders by assisting with product preparation, packaging, and labeling to ensure accuracy and timely delivery.
- Help prioritize and process orders according to the Lead Grind Staff's instructions and assist in meeting production deadlines.
4. Safety & Compliance:
- Follow all USDA safety regulations and guidelines to ensure compliance with health and safety standards during all processing activities.
- Assist in maintaining a clean, organized, and sanitary work environment, including the cleaning of equipment and work surfaces regularly.
- Report any safety hazards or equipment malfunctions to the Lead Grind Staff or Operations Manager immediately.
5. Special Projects:
- Assist with special projects as assigned by the Operations Manager or Lead Grind Staff to support the overall efficiency of the plant.
- Take on additional tasks as directed, contributing to the effective functioning of the facility.
6. Cross-Training & Plant Collaboration:
- Participate in cross-training opportunities to learn and support various plant operations, including processing, kill floor, and packaging.
- Collaborate with team members across departments to ensure smooth operations and support plant-wide goals.
- Assist in other areas of the plant as needed, helping to ensure flexibility and operational efficiency.
Compensation
this position is: hourly, varies DOE, $15.00 - $18.00
