Lead a beloved island market where your grocery expertise, creativity, and community leadership shape daily life for an entire Maine community.
ABOUT THE ROLE
North Haven Market is seeking a hands-on General Manager to oversee our year-round grocery and diner operation on North Haven Island. This role is essential to our community’s food access and daily life. You’ll manage purchasing, inventory, team leadership, and overall operations with real autonomy to build systems and improve the guest experience.

WHAT A WEEK LOOKS LIKE
A week is structured and consistent. Expect a rhythm that includes:
- Ordering from key vendors and keeping shelves well-stocked
- Receiving deliveries and checking accuracy
- Supporting and directing the team through daily tasks
- Creating schedules that reflect staffing needs and seasonality
- Keeping the store clean, organized, and welcoming
- Helping customers — chatting with locals in winter, greeting returning summer residents
- Monitoring product movement and adjusting buying plans
- Checking in with ownership on budgets, priorities, and improvements
It’s purposeful work without unnecessary chaos — you’ll run a stable system that you continually refine.
WHO YOU ARE
Required:
- Grocery purchasing + food inventory management experience
- Leadership experience
Able to lift 40 lbs and stand throughout the day

Your Leadership Style:
We value leaders who lead by example. This is an all-hands environment, and the General Manager is part of the daily workflow — jumping in on a register, helping restock, receiving deliveries, or assisting with quick cleanup when needed. We’re looking for someone who feels comfortable doing any task they ask of their team and sees shared work as an essential part of healthy, respectful leadership.
Dealbreakers: Lack of food inventory experience, inflexibility with communication styles, or unwillingness to be hands-on in daily operations.
LIFE ON NORTH HAVEN
North Haven is small, quiet, friendly, and deeply community-oriented. People know each other by name. It’s a place where outdoor hobbies, slower moments, and meaningful work matter.
Housing is private (best suited for an individual or a couple) and located on the property.
The market is open 7am–7pm, seven days a week; weekend/holiday time is shared across the team.

We serve everyone — year-round residents, seasonal families, fishermen, visitors, and people across all incomes. Specialty items are important, but so are everyday essentials. Winter offerings should feel just as thoughtful as summer.

Compensation
this position is: salaried, varies DOE, $50,000.00 - $65,000.00
