Role Summary
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced, sous‑chef level candidate who is motivated to join a positive, professional, collaborative team environment with abundant growth opportunities.
The Assistant Kitchen Manager reports to the Kitchen Manager, executing high‑quality food production, managing kitchen operations, supervising staff, and maintaining consistency with Mast’s rigorous standards. Working with store management, you will help ensure smooth daily operations in an open kitchen while fostering teamwork, efficiency, and an exceptional guest experience.
Open availability is essential as our cafe operates daily from early morning through evening (kitchen is open 7am-7pm daily). Additionally, a car is required — Bedford Village, NY does not have convenient mass transit access. This is a full time position with an expectation of 35-40 hours/week.
Key Responsibilities
Assist with day‑to‑day kitchen operations, including prep, cooking, and plating
Supervise, train, and support kitchen staff to ensure execution of recipes and standards
Help manage food quality, portion control, and consistency
Maintain cleanliness, safety, and sanitation in accordance with health codes
Support inventory control, ordering, and stock rotation
Assist with scheduling and staff coordination
Communicate effectively with service team and management
Monitor food waste and contribute to cost control efforts
Step in to lead kitchen operations in the absence of the Kitchen Manager
Work with store management to set, maintain and achieve benchmarks/sales goals towards ongoing growth and success.
Qualifications & Requirements
Proven kitchen experience, ideally in a café, bakery, or fast‑casual restaurant
Sous chef / cook level experience preferred
Strong leadership and communication skills
Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment with high standards
Knowledge of food safety and sanitation best practices
Open availability including early mornings, weekends, and holidays
A car is required (Bedford Village, NY is not easily accessible by public transit)
Positive, team‑oriented attitude and problem‑solving mindset
