Company description
College of the Atlantic’s Beech Hill Farm produces certified organic vegetables for COA and the Mount Desert Island community, while using methods that maintain the integrity and health of the land, and work toward environmental and economic sustainability. We have six acres in production and six greenhouses. In addition to providing locally and sustainably raised produce and meat to COA, Beech Hill Farm operates a busy seasonal farm store, offers a CSA program, sells to local markets and restaurants and distributes produce through our student run food access program. We are located on Mount Desert Island, home to beautiful Acadia National Park.
Beech Hill Farm provides educational opportunities to COA students and community members through our work-study program, summer work program, independent projects, class visits, events, and workshops.
Job description
Job Overview:
The kitchen manager creates prepared foods and value added products to sell in our farm stand including baked goods, soups, salads, pesto, salad dressing and tomato sauce prioritizing the use of farm produce. The kitchen manager is responsible for keeping a clean and organized work space and following all food safety protocols.
Qualifications:
Ability to work both independently and efficiently
Strong attention to detail and food safety
2 + years experience in a production kitchen
Food Safety CFPM (Certified Food Protection Manager) certificate, or willingness to get within two weeks of starting the position.
Knowledge, passion, and familiarity with local, organic, and seasonal produce.
This position requires the use of a personal smartphone to perform essential duties, including texting, phone calls and accessing G-Chat, our farm communication platform.
Job Responsibilities:
Maintain a high standard of cleanliness, organization, sanitation and food safety protocols
Prepare high quality prepared and valued added food for sale in the farm stand.
Help design a seasonal offering of products.
Create and recommend new recipes and methods to improve quality and increase production.
Perform daily inventory counts.
Place ingredient and packaging orders.
Organize, label and date all food items in storage per DOH standards and food safety guidelines.
Prepare a weekly crew lunch for 15 people.
Maintain constructive communication with all members of the farm staff.
Compensation:
$21/hour plus a 40% discount on all items in our farm store
Schedule:
May 11 - November 25. Monday - Friday. Hours TBD. Kitchen manager will work either 6am - 3pm or 7am - 4pm.
Vacation and time off:
1 hour paid time off (PTO) for every 40 hours worked plus 9 unpaid days off. PTO can be used after 120 days of employment.
Housing:
Room available for rent in a shared apartment with other farm staff in Northeast Harbor.
Compensation
this position is: hourly, $20/hr +
