Laughing Earth is a diversified farm in Brunswick, NY whose mission is to feed the bellies and minds of our local community, both raising food in an ecologically-minded way and teaching our farm members and consumers about the true costs and benefits of food production. On our 175-acre conserved farm, we raise vegetables for a 140-family Farm Share program and our on-farm store, as well as rotationally pasture a variety of livestock to sell the meat and eggs both on the farm and at the local farmers’ market.

Job Overview:

The assistant livestock manager is one of two people in this position, so works in tandem with the other assistant livestock manager to care for the pastures and animals of Laughing Earth. This job involves being outdoors all day, every day, accomplishing a wide variety of jobs in a wide variety of conditions. This work is often solo, but requires communication and cooperation with others.

Qualifications:

Ability to work both independently and efficiently

Good time management
Strong attention to detail and safety
2+ seasons of experience with a small-to-mid-scale pasture-based livestock operation.

Comfort working with meat and animal processing

Ability to lift 50 lbs repetitively, walk several miles a day over uneven terrain, and continue to work outdoors in all weather

Ability to drive small motorized vehicles in off-road settings

Job Responsibilities:

Seasonal and weekly planning
Pasture rotation planning and execution for meat chickens, egg chickens, pigs, cattle, sheep, turkeys.
Daily feeding, watering, and maintenance of the above listed animal populations

Planning and assisting with poultry slaughter

Maintenance of tools and spaces associated with livestock management

Full time, 40-45 hours per week, 5 days per week.

Compensation: $18/hr depending on experience

Vacation and time off:
Laughing Earth maintains a PTO and sick leave policy that accrues at 1 hour paid time off (PTO) for every 40 hours worked plus 1 paid sick day per 80 hours worked.
