Job description
The Urban Farm Manager is a full time exempt management position, whose responsibilities include managing the operations of the Rooftop Medicine Farm and offsite Greenhouse. Duties and responsibilities include greenhouse, harvest, and field production management. These duties include but are not limited to crop planning, seed starting, propagation, field preparation, planting, weeding, fertility and pest management, irrigation maintenance, harvesting, communication with partners, coordinating delivery, supply ordering, and farm crew oversight. Administrative responsibilities include extensive data entry, documentation and record keeping of work hours, inputs, and other farm data via online record keeping software. The Urban Farm Manager will also be responsible for coordination and support of our volunteer program, Mutual Support program, tours, education and training activities as a part of DMC programming.
Responsibilities:
Administration: Management and oversight of farm crew hours and scheduling. Keeping track of crew hours and paid time off/sick time, assisting Office Manager with payroll.
Documenting and tracking work hours, tasks, inputs, harvests, distributions and other record keeping via app/online documentation software.
Updating crop plans, seeding and transplant records.
Organic Certification Record Keeping - Maintaining extensive records for Organic certification compliance from seed to distribution, assisting in preparing for inspections.
Ensuring staff, volunteers and interns adhere to health and safety regulations.
Scheduling rentals, repairs, maintenance and replacement of needed equipment and machinery (including farm van).
Assist with hiring and training new farm staff.
Assist in creating the season’s crop plan/priorities, planting map and successions together with the Farm Team.
Managing supplies for the farm and ensuring all supplies are adequately stocked- Keeping inventory of items, purchasing, picking up orders - asset expense and supplies expense record keeping.
Assist in communication with building and responding to issues in a timely manner.
Greenhouse: Responsible for the management of the offsite greenhouse including, but not limited to, starting seeds according to the crop plan calendar, thinning, up-potting and hardening off seedlings.
Keeping updated binder of all records for organic certification including seed/supply orders, seeding and fertilizing information.
Ordering and maintaining inventory of all supplies for greenhouse propagation and nursery operations.
Maintaining a regular, documented fertility cycle for seedlings and their application.
Transporting starts and supplies from offsite greenhouse to rooftop.
Harvest/ Distribution:Oversight of Harvesting activities including making harvest list, updating sheet and whiteboard, creating harvest plan, delegating crops washing/packing, weighing/labeling, organizing walk-in fridge, dividing up harvest for distribution partners.
Communication and coordination with DMC partners and managing the delivery of produce to appropriate partners in coordination with Farm Crew Lead.
Input of harvest and distribution data into recordkeeping software.
Field Management:
Field production activities include direct seeding, prepping beds, planting, cultivation, gathering appropriate tools needed for completion of tasks, identifying and communicating priorities and overseeing all tasks specific to bed management.
Coordination, delegation and planning with farm crew on daily tasks.
Following the season’s crop plan, communicate changes in plan when necessary and update spreadsheets.
Pest management - Identifying pest pressure, monitoring and enacting remediation in a timely manner and ensuring compliance with organic certification and product label laws. Recording all inputs in recordkeeping software.
Managing overall soil health with appropriate amendments/fertilizers, brewing compost teas, taking basic soil tests and adjusting irrigation accordingly.
Overseeing and handling on-site compost piles, monitoring temperatures, turning and sifting for use on the roof beds for plantings.
Keep the farm organized and clean with minimal waste, both in physical and paper form.
Programming/Other:Volunteer coordination - Outreach recruiting volunteers, emailing with volunteers and partners, communicating with volunteers day-of, creating priority list of tasks with farm staff, directing activities and demonstrating activities.
Coordination and oversight of volunteer and educational programs including, but not limited to, weekly volunteers, medical residents, Mutual Support Program, and school group visits.
Document as needed the work being done in photo, video and written form.
Help build professional networks and represent the values of DMC around advancing a culture and politics of care.
Present and articulate the purpose and vision of the work that DMC is doing around Farming is Medicine in relationship to the Rooftop Medicine Farm.
Attend the monthly Full Circle gathering and participate in storytelling.
Time Requirement: Full Time, 40 hours/week
Compensation: $70,304 for 12 months
Housing: Housing is not offered with this job.
Start Date and Timeline- February 2026
Once assigned to this role the Urban Farm manager will commit to the position for one year from start date. At both 3 and 6 months a peer review and evaluation will be had to evaluate performance and satisfaction with the role and work completed to determine what adjustments need to be made. After a year this agreement can be extended for a determined time period agreed to by all parties involved. Compensation
this position is: salaried, varies DOE, $65,520.00 - $68,640.00
