The Hollywood Farmers Market is a year-round Saturday market in all types of weather. At every market we host over 50 local farm and food businesses, see an average of 3,600 shoppers, listen to live music performances, and welcome other community organizations to share resources.
Job description
Location: Hybrid in Portland, OR
Compensation: $24/hr, 15-20 hours per week April-December 23rd (main season), 16 hours per month January-March (winter season) with more hours available as needed
PTO & Sick Time: Three paid Saturdays off per year (7.5 hours each) and 10 additional hours per year
The Volunteer and Program Coordinator (VPC) is central to the planning and execution of every market day as well as the market’s food access and volunteer programs. The VPC will assist the Operations Manager (OM) and lead volunteers to make the market day run smoothly and to ensure a welcoming climate at each market. A successful VPC is compassionate and kind, adaptable, energetic, decisive, and community-oriented.
The main season market day hours are roughly 6 AM to 2:30 PM. Hours outside of the market days are flexible. Winter season market day hours are roughly 7 AM to 2:30 PM.
The set-up and breakdown of the market involves lifting, moving, and assembling large tents as well as possibly assisting vendors or market guests with heavy lifting. The VPC must be able to squat, reach, and spend long hours standing. A typical work week looks like one day at the market, one day at our office in NE Portland, and a few hours of remote work.
Responsibilities
Volunteers
Recruit, train, schedule, and coordinate volunteers at the market. Maintain and update current volunteer database
Engage in community outreach focused on recruiting and engaging volunteers in support of market operations, special programs, and event days
Market day tasks and assignments for volunteers
Appreciation party at the end of each season
Update and maintain volunteer instructions, including job descriptions, resources, and basic volunteer handbook/binder
Food Access
Deep understanding of the market’s food access and token programs
Conduct quarterly outreach to promote the market’s food access programs
Be able to set up and operate the token program equipment as well as train others on best practices
Conduct yearly DUFB shopper survey
Attend all trainings related to food access and DUFB lead by Farmers Market Fund
Count, record, and reconcile all redeemed vendor tokens
Accurately enter into spreadsheet and share with ED
Ensure vendor token logs are in pouches and print new ones when necessary
Market Operations Support
Develop market site strategy, particularly regarding market programs
Assist with site set-up and tear-down
Assign market day tasks and assignments for volunteers and keep volunteers on track
Provide support as needed for at-market programs including music, community groups, special events, and kids activities
Attend to any shopper, vendor, or staff issues or tasks to ensure smooth operations of market day
Coordinate breaks with the information booth staff/market crew
Maintain, organize and neatly store equipment
