The Talking Farm operates the Howard Street Farm, a 2.5-acre urban farm in Skokie, as well as offsite educational gardens. It sells produce at local farmers’ markets, to restaurants and purveyors, and through its Farm Membership produce box program.
Job description
Staff farmer (Orchard Village) reports to the Production Manager and assists in the cultivation, maintenance, harvest, and operation of the Howard Street Farm and the garden at Orchard Village, a place for developmentally and intellectually disabled individuals in Skokie. The Staff Farmer implements crop plan(s) and facilitates their smooth operation. This position serves as the primary farmer at the partner garden at Orchard Village.* This is a full-time, seasonal position requiring approximately 35-40 hours/week seasonally (March-October) and is split approximately 50/50 between the Howard Street Farm and Orchard Village. This seasonal position starts in March and runs through the end of October (approximately 20 hours/month in the offseason may be required for crop planning and other preparation, and can be done offsite and worked around other commitments). A strong knowledge of organic farming and the ability to work individually are necessary for this position, although this individual will have a strong team of farmers to support them.
Compensation
this position is: hourly, $20/hr +
