Oaklands Farm, situated in the Kennebec River Valley, has been in our family for over 250 years. We are dedicated to sustainable farming practices, raising and selling pasture-fed beef and lamb on certified-organic grasslands. We also produce an award-winning cow's milk cheese, Roxanne, and intend to launch several sheep's milk and mixed milk cheeses in 2026.
Job description
Position Overview: We are seeking a skilled cheesemaker for our production facility. This is a seasonal position with a 3- month trial period to ensure a good fit for both the cheese maker and the company.
Key Responsibilities:
- Production: Participate in milk reception and storage, pasteurization, curd cutting, molding, pressing, salting, and aging cheese.
- Quality Control: Monitor temperature, humidity, pH levels, and brine salinity.
- Sanitation: Maintain a clean and hygienic production area, adhering to GMP’s and Food Safety Plan protocols.
- Equipment Operation: Use vats, pH meters, moisture analyzers, and other machinery; perform cleaning and maintenance.
- Packaging & Inventory: Cut and wrap, box, label, and prepare cheese for dispatch; manage supplies.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate production logs and quality assurance documentation.
Qualifications:
- Technical: Basic math, understanding of dairy science, attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, ability to follow recipes and SOPs.
- Physical: Ability to stand for long periods, lift up to 50 lbs, work in wet, hot, cold, and noisy environments.
- Soft Skills: Teamwork, communication, problem-solving, organization, dependability, positive attitude, and willingness to learn.
Employment Details:
- Type: Seasonal position during the milking season from May 1st through September 30th, 2026.
- Compensation: $18-$22/hour depending on level of experience.
- Schedule: Flexible hours, including early mornings and some weekend days as required.
