Job description
Sunfair Farm began in 2020 as a mixed vegetable and flower farm rooted in community, education, and land stewardship. Through our CSA, farmers markets, farm shop, and on-farm events, we cultivated not only food, but meaningful connections. After a three-year hiatus, our farm is reopening as a space for exploration in agriculture, education, and community engagement.
This season, we’re expanding that relationship with the introduction of a you-pick experience, inviting guests to interact directly with the land and growing process.
We are a lean, collaborative team that shares the workload while holding deep respect for the land, animals, our team, and our customers. We’re currently seeking an experienced Farm Manager to support and lead the day-to-day operations of the farm. This position reports directly to Farm Owners and manages two other full time employees.
The ideal candidate:
- Has hands-on experience managing diversified vegetable and flower production
- Is enthusiastic about regenerative and biodynamic growing systems
- Brings strong knowledge of growing strategies, planning, and execution
- Enjoys working with a small, passionate team and contributing at all levels
- Is excited to educate farm staff and guests alike around growing and harvesting practices
- Is comfortable taking on both big-picture responsibilities and daily farm tasks
- Is open to growing with the project as the farm evolves
- Is interested in art and architecture or other creative practices
This is a hands-on role for someone who values collaboration, adaptability, and community-centered farming. We’re looking for a manager who wants to invest in the land, the people, and the long-term vision of Sunfair Farm.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement annual crop plan, including:
- Updating and organizing crop lists
- Organizing time schedules and calendars for propagation, cultivation, fieldwork
- Field spacing, layout, and crop rotation plan
- Purchasing seeds according to seasons needs
- Creating weekly and daily task lists for farm team
- Record keeping for production, field work, fertility management
- Develop and manage annual production and harvest projections calendar based on crop plan across annual and perennial crops
- Work to improve farm’s ability to grow high quality food
- Incorporate cover cropping, soil amending, compost additions, biodynamic preparations, fertigation
- Purchase all amendments, seeds, compost, etc and coordinate material deliveries.
- Manage harvests in quality and care, including:
- Updating and organizing harvest lists for customers and store
- Organizing basic time overviews and setting team assignments for harvest days
- Managing post harvest, wash / pack processing workflows for all crops
- Managing production log, invoices, and sales reports
- Minding tone and pace for the team
- Providing training and feedback as necessary
● Manage trellising systems and purchase necessary materials, train team in set-up and continued maintenance.
● Manage season extension techniques, train team in set-up and continued maintenance.
● Manage integrative pest management through organic and biodynamic means, train team members in methods and schedule. Ensure that regular cadence is maintained.
● Record and compile harvest data for future crop plans and harvest projections calendars.
● Support business development through product updates for you-pick calendar, markets, and wholesale opportunities.
● Monitor the quality and quantity of crops
● Manage employee compliance with health, safety, and cleanliness protocols.
● Purchase all materials, tools, equipment for vegetable production and harvest.
● Hire additional crew members as needed.
● Manage all material, tool, and equipment maintenance and servicing for vegetable production and harvest.
● Support any necessary onsite supervision of contractors performing regular maintenance and repairs.
● Interact with farm visitors and ability to educate around the larger Sunfair project inclusive of onsite gallery and farm store offerings
● Educate farm visitors around best practices for harvesting and processing during you-pick hours
● Lead farm tours
● Support on-farm events and farm activation days
● Work with team on additional daily on-going tasks: Field / bed Preparation; propagation; direct seeding; transplanting; irrigation; cultivation; weeding; harvesting, washing, packing, delivering; tool care; pest & disease management; farm maintenance (maintaining and organizing work spaces); continued infrastructure and production space setup.
This is a year-round position, with a flexible schedule during winter months. We work 7-11 hours/day, 5 - 6 days/week depending on the time of year.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Starting $26-28 hourly depending on experience, with opportunity to move to salary position.
