Company description
Sunhouse Farm is a diverse farm that grows using organic and no till practices. I grow in Snow Camp NC on about 1/2 acre. A little over a third of the farm is in unheated high tunnels. My main focus is producing high caliber vegetables and growing as efficiently as possible without compromising quality.
I am Nik Vaughn, I started Sunhouse Farm in the summer of 2021. I started growing 5 days after I graduated from Appalachian State with a degree in Agroecology. I love what I do and take a lot of pride in the farm.
I grow over 30 crops. In the spring we focus on carrots, salad mix, broccolini and leafy greens like kale and collards. In the summer, the focus shifts tomatoes, squash, cucumbers and peppers. Fall is similar to spring.
I sell most of the produce at a Saturday farmers market, I also have a 40 member CSA as well as a few wholesale accounts.
2026 is my 5th year in production, each year I am looking to grow more efficiently since the farm is leased and has a set amount of beds. On the property, there are two other farms: Dinner Bell farm, they own the property and I lease from them, they also grow vegetables, and Rodwell Roots, they grow flowers. All of our businesses share tools and other things. I share the wash pack, shop, and walk-in cooler with Dinner Bell Farm.
The farm is located in the southern part of Alamance county. It is about 45 minutes from central Greensboro, 30 minutes from Burlington and 35 minutes from Chapel Hill.
Job description
Position details
I am looking to hire help two days a week from April through mid December. I am looking for someone who can work Tuesdays or Wednesdays and Fridays.
Start date: Early April
End date: Mid December
Responsibilities
Workers will be involved in most aspects of farm work, including:
Planting
Pruning
Weeding
Harvesting
Processing vegetables (wash, pack, counting, weighing)
Starting seeds
Helping flip beds
Other miscellaneous tasks that go into the day to day aspects of running a farm
These are back straining, sometimes tedious jobs, done in all kinds of weather. Together we will figure out what you are good at and enjoy doing and we will lean into them and make them the larger part of your tasks.
Ideal attributes
Ideal candidates need not have farm experience, though it is even better if you do. Some of the best farmers are those that have done physical labor in the past, have worked in team settings before (i.e. restaurant jobs, trail crews, camp counselors, etc.)
Key qualities include:
ability to follow instructions
a positive attitude and commitment to doing good work
experience working outdoors or doing physical labor
desire to learn about agriculture and why I've chosen our methods
patience for some unpredictability in your routine (Mother Nature does what she wants.)
Detail oriented
excitement to be part of an eventful farm community
making time to take care of yourself (you know: eating well, hydrating, sleeping, journaling, playing music, yoga, doing your laundry)
Farm work is very labor intensive, you must like working hard. Be sure of your ability to do the following
Bend, crouch, squat, stand and kneel for long periods of time
Ability to pick up 30-40 lbs consistently
Strong vision and attention to detail, being able to tell the different shades, colors, size and textures of vegetables
Able to drive
Working in the heat, it feels every year the heat gets worse. We will take lots of breaks in July and August to make sure we are staying safe and hydrated.
Fine motor skills, usage of scissors, pruners and rubber bands
Ability to go long periods without AC, there is no AC on the farm other than the walk-in coolers
What should I expect? If it's going to be super hot and muggy, we try to do the harder tasks in the morning. If it's going to rain cats and dogs, we try to harvest before the deluge. HOWEVER, this is a farm job - and you should be prepared to be out in all weather conditions to finish necessary tasks.
I anticipate a learning curve – and you will get better, more efficient and more confident as the season progresses. It can be humbling to not immediately be great at a task. I will teach you so we can be more efficient overall.
Schedule
Tuesdays or Wednesdays whichever works better for your schedule, but whichever day you pick needs to be consistent. So for the season we will stick with one of those days but the opportunity to move them around is definitely possible. And Fridays, Fridays are prep days for market and pack day for CSA, it is super important that we are able to get all veggies washed and packed for market on Saturday to ensure the freshest veggies for our customers
Tuesday or Wednesdays: this day will be mainly a project day meaning we will be weeding, flipping beds, starting seeds, planting and any other task that may come up.
Fridays: this day is mainly a harvest market and CSA, washing, packing, weighting and everything that goes into getting ready for market. There will also be some projects but they will be small and we will be focusing on getting ready for market.
We will start at 8am April-May and Mid September-October. This will change due to how hot it is out. We start at 9am starting mid October. We will always end at 4pm or earlier depending on the heat.
There will be a paid 30-45 minute lunch depending on weather. When it is hot we will take 45 and 30 the rest of the time. We will eat lunch in the shop, there is no AC or heat.
16 hours a week total including breaks and lunches
Time off
No formal paid off days due to the job being part time. However there can be unpaid vacation days with notice and ability to bounce around days worked to accommodate vacations. I also have some vacations planned throughout the year I will give you plenty of notice.
Compensation $15-$18 depending on experience. I will also increase your pay as you get better at the job.
Compensation
this position is: hourly, $15-20/hr
