Company description
Spring Creek Farm is an educational nonprofit farm that is a part of Alaska Pacific University. It is 1.5 acres of organically managed mixed vegetables in Palmer, Alaska. Each season, a new cohort of interns comes to the farm to work and learn about agriculture in the far north, and what it means to serve your greater community. The Kellogg Campus of APU that houses Spring Creek Farm has other education programs that run out of the same space. There's a Master of Science in Outdoor and Environmental Education, Alaska Tilth (an anti-hunger organization), Kellogg Field School (an environmental based homeschool enrichment program), Camp Kellogg, and other agricultural education work. The land we work on was trusted to the university in the 70s with an agreement to keep the focus on agriculture and nature based education.
Job description
Being an intern on Spring Creek Farm is primarily focused on learning the ins and outs of small-scale organically-managed vegetable farming. We start the season with working in the greenhouse, learning to make soil blocks, seeding, and watering. Then we transition to field prep with fertilizing, tilling, and tarping. This rolls right into transplanting and direct-seeding, and eventually into weeding, maintenance, and harvest. Towards the end of the season, we put fields to rest and clean up all materials before the long Alaskan winter sets in.
Alongside the field work, the crew is assigned a short reading each week, which is discussed during Friday meetings and accompanied by a field walk. This allows for a deeper understanding of agriculture than we can learn on our small farm, and encourages the sharing of different perspectives. We work Monday-Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, with weekends off. Compensation is $2,000/month, housing on-farm, and a CSA share. Outside of the farm, there is live music to see, mountains to climb, and tons to explore.
