We create food access, economic development, and community building through hands-on education, farmers markets, and distribution programs. The Food Access team administers the programs such as Produce Plus, FRESHMATCH, Free Summer Meals, Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP). These programs provide locally grown fruits and vegetables from farmers markets to residents with limited access to fresh, nutritious food.
Job description
WHO YOU ARE:

- Excited to engage with local farmers at DC-area farmers markets & meet customers where they work and play within the District (ie. at farmers markets, local libraries, and recreation centers)
- Demonstrated ability to quickly gain proficiency with & provide users of all skill levels with support using new technologies
- Clear communicator who can build strong & positive relationships with people from all walks of life
- STRONGLY PREFERRED: native speaker or fluent in Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin - spoken; Traditional or Simplified - written)
WHAT YOU’LL DO: DC Food Access Associates support the Produce Plus & FMNP programs, customers, and stakeholders through their work to support customer enrollment and program usage at-market and virtually, and through supporting the farmers administering these programs at local farmers markets. We are seeking to hire one Associate for 2026 season, with the opportunity for rehire in future seasons:
Food Access Program Operations Support
- Support DC Health and FRESHFARM staff to manage technology and other program supply inventory (devices, signage, etc.) across approved farmers and partners;
- Support distribution operations: partner with market staff and partners to distribute benefit cards, resolve issues, etc. and maintain cordial relationships with staff at distribution sites;
- Communicate program updates to customers and community organizations;
- Support market staff in creating a comfortable, inclusive, and enjoyable customers at market;
- Attend team meetings and complete applicable trainings;
- Assist in end-of-season evaluation efforts in order to collect stakeholder feedback.
Farmer Technical Assistance
- Resolve farmer’s issues with devices, software,, and reimbursements process, and resolve participant issues with account, balance, or transactions at program locations or over the phone
- Collaborate with DC Health and FRESHFARM staff to troubleshoot program implementation issues
- Support DC Health and FRESHFARM staff with data entry and cleaning
Food Access Program Community Engagement
- Assist with enrollment activities for food access programs over the hotline;
- Communicate program updates to customers and community organizations;
- Provide on-site support at local events to get participants enrolled in food access programs.

THE DETAILS:
- Compensation: This is an hourly, non-exempt position, which is compensated as follows:
- Bilingual Associates: $22.66-$23.69 / hour
- Associates: $21.63-$22.66 / hou
- Schedule: This is a part-time, seasonal position with variable hours, typically as follows
- During the main program season (Spring - Fall) Associates work variable weekly hours, up to 15 hours per week; a mutually agreed upon weekly schedule will be created.
- Weekly Schedule Requirements:
- At Least 1 Weekend Shift (In Person): Saturdays and/or Sundays ~9am-1pm
- 1-3 Weekday Shifts (In Person and/or Remote): each shift will be 4 hours long between 9am-8pm; hours based on market and/or program schedule
- Additional shifts may be available pending program needs and employee interest.
- This is a seasonal role that will terminate on 9/30/2026, with potential to extend through 12/11/2026, pending program needs
- While not required, we are excited to find candidates that are interested in returning for future seasons! A desire to return for future years would be a plus.
- Working Locations: The person in this role must be able to:
- Work remotely on weekdays using their phone and a tablet or laptop
- Work in person on weekends, and some weekdays: travel across Washington, DC to work at one or more Produce Plus sites and/or Senior FMNP farmers market. (Note: given the wide range of working locations, stipends are available for local commutes)
- Attend occasional meetings and supply pick-ups at our office in Downtown DC
PHYSICAL & OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, for up to 4 hrs/day, and move about the farmers market worksites (including sitting, standing, and walking/moving)
- Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19
- Must have access to a personal smartphone; $25/month stipend provided for use
