Allandale Farm is a vegetable farm and plant nursery on the border of Jamaica Plain and Brookline. We steward over 100 acres of land on which we grow 20 acres of diversified vegetable crops and garden plants, operate an on-site farmstand & garden center, and provide educational programming and events.

Job description

The Assistant Grower works with the production crew and in cooperation with the Farm Manager in all aspects of production, harvest, and post harvest distribution. The position is geared towards an experienced farmer looking to increase their level of responsibility, decision making, and leadership. This position has shifting responsibilities, beginning with greenhouse production and becoming more focused on field production and distribution during the harvest season. Opportunity for Christmas season and year-round long-term employment for the right candidate.

Responsibilities:

Greenhouse Production

● Maintains oversight of daily watering, plant maintenance, and weekly seeding

● Leads crew through necessary greenhouse tasks (e.g. veg seeding and shifting)

● Communicates seedling/plant conditions and field readiness

● Uses IPM strategies to scout for pest and disease problems

● Maintains a sanitary and organized greenhouse environment respectful of the shared space Field Harvest and Production

● Leads daily harvest, wash and pack of field vegetables and cut flowers

Field and Harvest Production

● Participates in field production tasks like cultivation, seeding and transplanting

● Assists with record keeping, inventory processing, and food safety documentation CSA and Wholesale Distribution

● Assists with organization for our 350 family CSA pickup

● Prepares wholesale orders for chefs and restaurants in the Boston area

● Assists with daily harvest organization and distribution for CSA, market, and wholesale

Qualifications:

● Strong work-ethic, excellent attention to detail, and strong time management skills

● Previous experience in commercial vegetable production and harvest

● Ability to lift 50 pounds repeatedly and work in all weather conditions

● Commitment to workplace equity and inclusion measures

● Spanish English language skills highly desired

Compensation:

● Wage $22-$25/hr

● Paid 15 minute break and 30 minute lunch
