We grow a variety of vegetables, cut flowers, and shiitake mushrooms with a strong focus on soil health and sustainability. Our products are sold through farmers' markets, restaurants, natural food stores, and wholesale buyers throughout central Maine. Job description
Marr Pond Farm is hiring for part-time and full-time crew members who have an enthusiasm and genuine interest in learning about organic farming, a strong work ethic and desire to take pride in their work, and the adaptability to take on a wide array of responsibilities over the course of the season. Crew members will work both in groups and independently (after training) on all day-to-day operations of the farm.
The position includes, but is not limited to:
• Seed starting, plant propagation, and greenhouse watering
• Harvesting, washing, and packing vegetables and mushrooms
• Utilizing farm trucks and equipment to accomplish tasks
• Staffing farmers markets and making deliveries (All employees are expected to attend at least one farmers’ market a season).
• Cleaning crates and harvest buckets
• Mushroom log inoculation and mushroom yard maintenance
• Transplanting and fertilizing
• Cultivation and hand weeding
• Field maintenance (trellising, laying and removing row cover, etc.)
• Record keeping
• Basic farm maintenance
Crew members will start in May and finish the week before Thanksgiving, with exact dates to be agreed upon at hire. Preference is given to applicants available for the full season, but we’ll also consider those able to commit to at least 2 months.
The ideal candidate will be:
• Positive and adaptable in a fast-paced environment
• Enjoy physical work and embrace challenging tasks (who needs the gym when you’ve carried all those watermelons?!)
• Able to find humor in work and life
• Efficient, with a strong sense of urgency
• Passionate about good food and organic farming
• Self-motivated and dependable. (you’ll need a car due to our rural location)
• Open to feedback and eager to learn
• Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
• A problem solver, detail-oriented, and observant
• Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
• Capable of lifting 50 lbs, standing, and bending for extended periods—this job is physical!
• Available some weekends for rotating farmers’ market duties
• Be able to drive their own vehicle to fields if needed (some of our fields are a couple miles away from the farm).
Experience:
- Farming experience is a plus, but not required. If you don’t have farm experience, be ready to share how your background has prepared you for the physical and mental challenges of farm work—it's hard work, but very rewarding..
- Experience with physical, outdoor, or fast-paced work is required.
- Some familiarity with plants or gardening is helpful, but not necessary.
- Basic math skills are required.
- A valid driver’s license is required, and the ability to drive a standard vehicle is a plus!
- Experience with basic tools, basic carpentry, and a handy problem solving aptitude is helpful but not required.
Compensation:
Starting pay is $16-18/hour, depending on experience. More experienced candidates may be considered for the Assistant Farm Manager position—email us for details.
Farm crew members get free vegetables for personal use, with bulk produce available for preservation at the farmers' discretion.
Educational opportunities are available to interested employees as they arise.
