Job description
The Garden Education Coordinator will work closely with the Garden Education Manager to develop and implement farm and garden educational programming for grades K-12 and beyond. The Garden Education Coordinator will also assist in the maintenance of multiple off-site gardens, including weeding, watering, planting, building beds, and more. The ideal candidate is energetic, dynamic, and detail-oriented with a strong understanding of both sustainable agriculture techniques and outdoor education. The Garden Education Coordinator will report to the Garden Education Manager.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Site Planning: Assists Garden Education manager in the development of planting plans, mapping, and more of various educational sites maintained by the Kearsarge Food Hub in the Kearsarge region, including at Kearsarge Regional Elementary School, Simonds Warner Elementary School, Sunset Hill Education Institute, Kearsarge Community Commons, and more.
- Maintenance: Assists Garden Education Manager and students in maintenance tasks including planting, harvesting, weeding, watering, pruning, trellising, construction of raised beds, etc.
- Education Support: Assists Garden Education manager in the development and implementation of garden and nature based education programs, including elementary school programs, Farm & Forest Club, High School Extended Learning Opportunities, etc.
- Marketing, Communications, and Material Development: Aids in the creation of materials associated with the promotion and execution of educational programming.
- Event Support: Assists in the development, planning, and execution of educational offerings at Kearsarge Food Hub Events.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Skills& Abilities
- Farm & Garden Expertise: Deep knowledge of sustainable food production such as permaculture, organic farming/gardening, market gardening, etc. in New Hampshire or Zone 5b.
- Understanding of and commitment to nature based, explorative, outdoor education.
- Problem-Solving & Adaptability: Ability to think on your feet to observe, interact, and resolve issues, in the field, classroom, or office, as they arise.
- Organization & Time Management: Skilled at balancing multiple priorities, such as the maintenance needs of various garden sites, assisting with the execution of concurrent programs, lesson plan development, etc.
- Physical & Mental Resilience: Capacity to stand for long periods, lift up to 50 lbs, and remain calm during emergency situations.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions.
- Passion for local food systems and community-based work.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Education & Experience:
- 1+ years of market garden and/or farm work experience
- 1+ years experience working with children
- First Aid & CPR Certification (or ability to obtain it within 30 days) is required.
- Background check through the Kearsarge Regional School District is required within 30 days of hire.
Physical Requirements:
- Mobility & Stamina: Prolonged standing, walking, digging, and other activities associated with farming and gardening.
- Lifting & Carrying: Regularly lifting, pushing, or pulling heavy items, often up to 50 lbs or more.
- Body Mechanics: Frequent bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching.
- Manual Handling: Operating farm & garden tools and machinery.
- Environmental Tolerance: Ability to work in all weather conditions.
Compensation
this position is: hourly, $15-20/hr
