Job description
Working in a nurturing and child friendly environment, the sous chef plays a critical hands-on role in the kitchen, supporting the Executive Chef (EC) and Director of Food Service and Nutrition in all aspects of food production and meal service within our school's food service operation. Reporting directly to the Executive Chief, this role is pivotal in upholding the standards and mission of our culinary program.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate closely with the Executive Chef to ensure seamless kitchen operations, including food preparation, meal service, and adherence to quality and safety standards. - Provide hands-on training and guidance to new employees, acting as a mentor and teacher for culinary techniques and best practices.
- Oversee and support kitchen assistants, providing feedback and ensuring the consistent execution of recipes and procedures.
- Conduct regular tastings to ensure food quality, temperature, and taste meet our standards, addressing any issues promptly.
- Manage inventory and minimize food waste by ensuring all products are utilized efficiently and stored properly.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, setting cleaning expectations and ensuring adherence to health code requirements.
- Clearly label and communicate any food allergies and special meals, and communicate with the Executive Chef on any allergens within the food or recipes.
- Communicate any equipment issues or maintenance needs to the Executive Chef and assist in resolving them promptly.
- Assist with administrative tasks, including ordering supplies, allergen labeling, inventory management, and responding to emails and requests in the absence of the Executive Chef.
- Provide complete coverage and managerial support in the absence of the Executive Chef, including overseeing catering events, attending meetings, and representing the department.
- Foster a positive work culture by setting the tone for the team, promoting collaboration, and addressing any conflicts or concerns promptly.
- Collaborate with the Executive Chef to develop and execute the school’s food service program's vision, continuously seeking opportunities for improvement and innovation.
- Provide coverage of Winter/Spring Break Camps and summer school.
- Assist with prep dishes and cleaning up/break down of the kitchen.
Job Requirements
- Ability to lift 50 lbs and work in a physically demanding environment for extended periods.
- Strong attention to detail and integrity in all aspects of work.
- Ability to work cleanly, with speed, accuracy, and efficiency.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Native or bilingual proficiency in English
Compensation
- We offer a competitive salary for this position ranging from $67,500 to $75,000.
