About the Job
As the Associate Butcher, you are responsible for buying for the Butcher department for your store, meeting your department’s sales and margin goals, and maintaining healthy and lasting relationships with our partners. You are also responsible for all day-to-day operations of the butcher department, ensuring a fresh and appealing display by keeping cases and shelves clean and well stocked by cutting, rotating, and removing out-of-date products.
You will collaborate with the Store Manager, the Lead Butcher Clerk, and the team of Butcher Clerks to ensure thoughtful displays and service throughout the department and store.

- Meet all financial performance metrics of the department, including sales, margin, and waste goals, as well as the percentage of store sales targets.
- Buy for the Butcher department in your store based on inventory, customer requests, and location-specific product sets and aesthetics. Collaborate with the Lead Butcher Clerk to ensure daily consistency in ordering and product offering.
- Oversee PO creation, inventory, receiving, distribution, and overall management of the Butcher Department.
Review inventory on a daily and monthly basis, updating pars and order guides as needed
- Oversee and execute the collection and accuracy of your departments’ EOQ inventory
- Demonstrate a robust knowledge of our sourcing standards and product mix, with the ability to speak to why we source from where we source from
- Proactively buy holiday products before the holiday seasons
In collaboration with Lead Butcher Clerk and Store Leadership, supervise the Butcher department team.
- Develop & execute training guides for Deli/Butcher Clerks
Assist ABB, Deli Shift Lead, and other PICs on shift in coordinating breaks as needed
- Monitor and prevent spoilage, regularly communicate waste to the buyer/team, and log in LOC.
- Create and print signs for the department as needed
Maximize sales potential through effective and proper procedures for prepping, storing, rotating, stocking, and merchandising products.
- Follow and comply with, or ensure compliance with, established procedures, including Weights and Measures, health and sanitation, and safe work practices.
- Maintain, or ensure maintenance of, a clean and sanitary working and shopping environment; maintain equipment in accordance with cleanliness and safety standards.
- Assisting the deli and butcher team as needed with cooking, stocking, slicing, and counter service
- Perform opening, mid, and closing duties as assigned.
Work with the Butcher teams and the Commissary Kitchen team to keep an open and consistent line of communication between the kitchen and the stores
- Ensure excellent customer service and hospitality standards are upheld
- Communicate and collaborate with co-workers, supervisors, team members, and/or outside contacts in a timely and appropriate manner and in line with our Communication Code of Conduct
- Demonstrate consistent work attendance
Ensure food safety standards are being met at all times
Maintaining a positive, equitable work environment for all staff
Competencies
- Ability to cut and fabricate meat products from all species, including Beef, Pork, Poultry, Lamb & Seafood
- Ability to create further processed meat products such as sausage, meatballs, etc.

Work environment
Office and sales floor of retail grocery stores
Physical demands
- Must be able to lift 25 lbs
- Must be able to spend 6-8 hours per day on your feet
- Stooping, bending, lifting, standing for long periods of time, stretching, twisting, reaching, repetitive stocking motions, repetitive food prep motions
- Must be able to lift and carry 50 lb cases of meat and seafood repeatedly
- Handling of refrigerated products in a cold environment for extended periods of time
Required education and experience
At least 2-3 years of meat cutting/butcher experience
Preferred education and experience
- Experience with retail, preferably grocery
- Experience with food preparation, service, and safety
Additional Eligibility Requirements
Must be 18 years or older
