Founded in 2023, Turtle Rock Farm is a small farm located in the heart of Bedford, NY. We operate on a market garden scale to grow an array of produce using organic practices for local restaurants and direct to consumer markets. Turtle Rock Farm will eventually develop into a non-profit that integrates sustainable agriculture with community support, education and land preservation.

Our production space includes a climate-controlled greenhouse, about 1 acre of outdoor growing space and a small orchard. We grow everything from tomatoes and turmeric to peaches and lettuce. As we continue to grow, we will further expand our outdoor vegetable production to roughly 2 acres. Shiitake mushrooms and cut flower production will also be added to our future crop plan.

Job description

We are looking for individuals that are motivated, adaptable, and not afraid of hard work. The Farmhand will work as part of a small but growing team under the supervision of the General Manager and Field Crew Leader to assist in daily operations of the farm. This is a unique opportunity to be a part of a new farm with a growing team that loves coming to work everyday.

Preferred Skills/ Knowledge:

• Experience in vegetable production or relevant fields
• Basic understanding of organic and/ or regenerative farming principles is preferred
• Proficient in the use of garden hand tools – rakes, shovels, hoes, etc.
• Familiarity with BCS tractors is preferred but not expected
• Self-motivated with the ability to work effectively and cooperatively under the supervision of management, as part of a team and independently
• Ability to bring enthusiasm, initiative, and a good attitude each day, especially during peak season.
• Detail oriented, organized and excellent communication skills
• This is a physical job that involves working in all weather conditions – the ability to work at a quick pace while under strenuous conditions is expected. This includes bending, lifting 50+ LB, pushing, raking, harvesting and similar activities
• Driver’s license is required to fulfill job duties.
  

Farm Hand Duties:

The Farm Hand will assist in all aspects of production including (but not limited to):

• Crop and soil maintenance (planting, seeding, weeding, composting, etc.)
• Harvest/post-harvest operations
• Deliveries
• Pest Control / Implementing IPM protocols
• Chicken husbandry for a small flock of laying hens
• Deliveries and customer interactions
• Farmer's Market
  • setup/breakdown
  • assisting with sales/ customer interaction
• Record keeping and data logging with Excel and farm software
  

Typical Hours & Environment:

• 40 Hours per week
• The farm hand position is seasonal with an expected time frame of April 1, through end of October (2026).
• Due to the nature of farming, employees may be asked to extend working days during the busy season
• Weekend availability is required on a rotating basis

Compensation:

• $20 - $25/ hr. depending on experience
• Transition to a permanent position will be considered for the right candidate
