Company description
Closter Farm and Livestock Co. is a 7-acre certified Organic and Real Organic farm in Closter, NJ, dedicated to producing high-quality vegetables and poultry. Our mission is to provide our community with fresh, Organic produce and meats through our on-site farm market and to provide an alternative to big grocery stores in the area.
Job description
Position Overview: We are seeking an outgoing and food-loving person to join our Market Staff. If you like talking to strangers (and many lovely weekly customers) about food all day, this may be the job for you!
Closter Farm’s market staff are the face of the farm and often the first connection the public has to local food. You will be the reason customers keep coming back (after the amazing produce, of course)! Unlike a grocery store, our staff knows the stories of the products we sell: where they’re from, why we buy them, why we love them, why we eat them ourselves, and why the customer should bring them home!
Our customers have lots of questions (What color feet do our chickens have? How do I cook with broccoli raab? Who grew this spinach?) and we are happy to answer them. As such, it’s important that market staff be willing to learn about our products, be very comfortable in a public facing position, be able to answer questions, and be able to patiently assist with shopping with a smile.
As a farm market, we have limited indoor space. The Market is set up and broken down every day like a farmers market stand. This includes lifting and carrying crates/boxes of produce from outdoor display to the walk-in cooler, with the assistance of carts as needed.
Market shifts overlap with additional market staff for most of the day, and there will also be times when you are solo in the market. The Farm Crew is also on site Mon-Fri until about 4pm. We have fun, sell lots of food, and eat lots of snacks!
Daily responsibilities include: sales (priority #1), restocking, organizing, quality control, inventory updating, cleaning, customer service, working the register, and learning about our products.
All market staff members are expected to learn our POS system and about our products, and if the Farm Manager asks, to occasionally assist with other farm tasks including building, weeding, harvesting, and washing produce. We work in all weather types: hot, cold, rain, etc.
-Market Staff reports to the Market Manager.
Qualifications:
-This is a physical job on a farm and candidates must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs repeatedly, stand for extended periods, and bend repeatedly. This type of retail position is similar to a farmers’ market job.
-A strong sense of urgency and purpose is KEY, with an eye for details.
-Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
-Ability to work with a small team and independently.
-Weekend availability.
-A desire to learn will make up for any lack of experience!
-This is an in-person, on-site job and requires a vehicle to travel to and from the farm.
A plus, but not a requirement:
-Experience in retail and/or food service, especially in a sales role.
-Farming experience.
-Working knowledge of food storage, upkeep, and display best practices.
-A love of food, gardening, and cooking.
-A strong understanding of Organic farming principles and a commitment to sustainable agriculture and a passion to learn.
-HACCP training, food handlers’ and other food related education and certifications.
Market Hours:
The market is open 7 days a week, 9am-6pm year round. Weekend and infrequent Holiday shifts are expected.
We are closed from Thanksgiving through the following Monday for a full-farm rest as well as Christmas day.
Compensation
this position is: hourly, $15.49 - 20/hr
