Located in Spruce Pine, in Mitchell County, North Carolina, Mitchell Giving Gardens is a nonprofit that cultivates community around food through shared resources and bountiful places. We develop gardens, distribute food, and activate outdoor public spaces to improve the quality of life in our rural Appalachian community. Our vision for a strong local food system is rooted in trusted local partnerships, and we aim to implement sustainable solutions as a pathway to community well-being.
Our approach is threefold:
- We operate a biointensive learning garden in Spruce Pine’s Riverside Park.
- We host no-cost fresh food markets called harvest tables.
- We provide educational programming and resources related to gardening and food literacy.
Job description
Mitchell Giving Gardens is seeking one seasonal staff member to support garden operations and fresh food distribution programs from May through September. Weekly hours will vary based on seasonal needs, averaging approximately 12 hours per week. Compensation range is $16 - $17.50/hour.

Essential Responsibilities
- Support all aspects of food production at the MGG garden site in Spruce Pine.
- Perform physically demanding tasks such as bed preparation, seeding, transplanting, trellising, weeding, mulching, watering, and harvesting
- Maintain consistent garden care, including watering and upkeep.
- Assist with Harvest Table fresh food distribution events, including setup, welcoming participants, and breakdown.
- Lift and carry items up to 40 lbs
- Engage with community members in a welcoming and respectful manner.
- Lead volunteers during work-and-learn sessions.
- Be available on 2nd & 4th Fridays from 3:00 - 7:00 pm June - September.
