We create food access, economic development, and community building through hands-on education, farmers markets, and distribution programs. The Food Access team administers the programs such as Produce Plus, FRESHMATCH, Free Summer Meals, Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP). These programs provide locally grown fruits and vegetables from farmers markets to residents with limited access to fresh, nutritious food.
Job description
WHO YOU ARE:
- Have experience engaging with community members, working or volunteering at farmers markets, or
experience with the Produce Plus, Senior FMNP programs, or other federal assistance programs
- Excited to meet customers where they work and play within the District
- Rooted in the DC community & passionate about increasing access to fresh, local produce
- Independently motivated, comfortable learning technology, and a strong communicator & listener
- Native speaker and/or fluent in both English and Chinese
- Must be comfortable using technology, including ZenDesk, laptops, smartphones, and Google suite
WHAT YOU’LL DO: We are seeking to hire one Champion to create a welcoming environment for farmers market
customers while supporting the enrollment and distribution for Produce Plus and Senior FMNP programs. (Must be
able to perform all customer facing duties in both English and Chinese).
Food Navigation
- Attend in-person food navigation events at local schools, early childhood education centers (ECEs), and
other community sites;
- Create a welcoming atmosphere for community members while engaging in outreach activities, including
sharing verbal and print information regarding food access programs/resources in DC;
- Support effective promotion and redemption of SNAP benefits and SNAP incentives at markets.
Program Operations
- Support benefit Produce Plus and SFMNP customers with card activation, benefit redemption, and troubleshooting both on-site at local farmers markets and farm stands and remote (when applicable)
- Support Produce Plus & Senior FMNP participants by completing shifts on the hotline;
- May be asked to provide on-site support at local farmers markets to enroll Produce Plus participants;
- Support market staff in creating a comfortable, inclusive, and enjoyable experience for Produce Plus and
Senior FMNP customers at market;
- Assist FRESHFARM staff in survey and end-of-season evaluation efforts.
Program Outreach and Communications
- Create relationships with local food organizations that align with customer interests and needs;
- Conduct outreach to connect customers with Produce Plus and Senior FMNP distribution sites and
program rules;
- Communicate partner and customer feedback to DC Health and the FRESHFARM management team.
Program Administration
- Assist with pre-season advocacy & end-of-season evaluation efforts to collect stakeholder feedback

THE DETAILS:
- Compensation: This is a part-time, seasonal, non-exempt position compensated at $22.28/hour, with
increases up to $25.46/hour
- Working Locations: The person in this role must be able to:
- Work remotely on weekdays using their phone and a tablet or laptop
- Work in person on weekends: travel across Washington, DC to work at multiple Produce Plus sites and
Senior FMNP farmers market. (Note: given the wide range of working locations, small stipends are available
for local commutes, pending funding)
- Occasional meetings will also be held at our office in Downtown DC
- Schedule: This is a part-time, seasonal, position with variable hours, generally no fewer than 15 hours per week and up to 30 hours per week
- Schedule Requirements - all Market Champions must be able to work:
- Three weekdays, four-hours per day, between 9am-3pm
- Tuesdays ~11am-2pm
- Chinese speakers will likely work on Tuesdays at our CityCenterDC market
- Saturdays ~9am-1pm
- Chinese speakers will likely work on Saturdays at our Mount Vernon Triangle
market
- Additional weekday hours (between 9am-3pm) or hours on Sundays (~9am-1pm) may be available,
pending program need and candidate interest; a mutually agreed upon weekly schedule will be created with the employee upon hire
- Seasonality: This seasonal role will end no later than 12/11/26
- While not required, we are excited to find candidates who are interested in returning for future seasons! A desire to return for future years would be a plus.
PHYSICAL & OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, for up to 6 hours per working day, and physically
move about the farmers market worksites (including sitting, standing/upright, and walking/moving)
- Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to access the FRESHFARM office
- Must have access to a personal smartphone; $25/month stipend provided for use
- If this employee does not have access to a tablet or laptop for work use, FRESHFARM can provide
