Position Description
The Community Engagement Dietitian reports to the Vice President of Nutrition Programming and Senior Director of Operations to promote whole grains and cultural food traditions. The Community Engagement Dietitian has excellent written and oral communication skills, is a problem-solver, understands the organization’s mission and can effectively educate others about it, is passionate about food and cooking, and enjoys building strong partner relationships and making a positive impact on public health.
Responsibilities
- Content Creation: The Community Engagement Dietitian stays up-to-date with news and ideas related to whole grains, cultural foodways, traditional recipes, nutrition, and related topics, and works with the Vice President of Nutrition Programming to generate relevant and timely content. As a dietitian with a firm understanding of nutrition communication rules and regulations, the Community Engagement Dietitian reviews existing written and digital content for nutritional accuracy and reviews recipes for nutritional balance making suggestions as needed.
- Whole Grain Promotions: The Community Engagement Dietitian demonstrates leadership, creativity, and initiative by planning whole grain promotional events throughout the year, including but not limited to Whole Day for Whole Grain (March), Whole Grains Month (September), and International Whole Grain Day (November). The Community Engagement Dietitian will also work with the Oldways Whole Grains Council team to pursue projects that strengthen and reflect the popularity of whole grains in public health, popular media, foodservice, and more.
- Communication: The Community Engagement Dietitian acts as a representative of Oldways at local, regional, national, and virtual conferences and events as needed, which may include hosting an info booth or leading presentations about the benefits of whole grains and/or Oldways’ nutrition initiatives. The Community Engagement Dietitian also effectively educates about Oldways’ mission in interviews with journalists and in videos for social media or Oldways’ website, and contributes to the Whole Grains Council blog regularly (approximately monthly).
- Administration and Customer Service: The Community Engagement Dietitian manages all aspects of the Registered Dietitian CPEU credit system, including submitting activities to CDR for approval; maintaining required records for CDR; managing CDR reporting and audits; certificate production; and answering questions from participants. The Community Engagement Dietitian may also work with the Vice President of Nutrition Programming to brainstorm creative continuing education opportunities that fulfill Oldways’ mission. The Community Engagement Dietitian also answers whole grain and nutrition related questions from consumers on a daily-to-weekly basis.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Must be a Registered Dietitian / Registered Dietitian Nutritionist
- Demonstrated passion for heritage diets and whole grains’ culinary, nutritional, and environmental benefits; if not familiar, willing and eager to learn more about heritage diets and whole grains and their characteristics
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; Ability to communicate complex nutrition topics in an accurate, welcoming, easy-to-understand manner
- Passion for and experience in home cooking; Food photography, video & recipe development skills are not a requirement, but are a plus
- Ability to work independently and with teams in a collegial environment
- Strong respect for cultural diversity and commitment to the mission of Oldways
Salary and Benefits
The starting salary range for this position is $75,000-$80,000 per year. Oldways offers a comprehensive benefits package including group health insurance, ability to contribute to a retirement plan with up to 3% employer match, paid sick time, holidays, vacation, and personal days and a warm company culture.
