Philo Ridge Farm (PRF) is a working nonprofit demonstration farm located in Vermont’s Champlain Valley. Using innovative and ecologically sustainable practices, we steward over 500 acres of pastureland, forests, and diversified produce gardens. We rotationally graze heritage breed livestock and cultivate certified organic fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Our mission is to promote organic regenerative agriculture through hands-on research, education, and community engagement. As a living laboratory, we provide farmers, students, and the public with opportunities to explore sustainable farming practices. Job description
Position Overview
Philo Ridge Farm is seeking a broadly skilled and creative Pastry Chef to lead the preparation of seasonal, farm-inspired desserts, baked goods, and breads that reflect our commitment to quality, sustainability, and regenerative agriculture. Working closely with the Executive Chef and kitchen team, the Pastry Chef is responsible for the consistent execution of dessert offerings for Farm Commons service and the daily pastry selections featured in our Market. This role includes thoughtful use of ingredients through proper product rotation, efficient prep, and creative menu development that celebrates the farm’s harvest throughout the seasons. The Pastry Chef position is a full-time position requiring a flexible schedule, including availability for mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays based on business needs.
Responsibilities
- Plan, lead, and execute daily pastry, baked goods, and bread production to support all kitchen outlets, including the Restaurant, Market, and Events
- Prepare and present all menu items with accuracy, timeliness, and consistency according to Philo Ridge Farm standards
- Collaborate with the Executive Chef and Chef de Cuisine to develop creative, seasonal menus that highlight ingredients grown and raised on the farm
- Preserve and process the seasonal harvest to support off-season menus and minimize food waste
- Source ingredients from like-minded local producers when Philo Ridge Farm products are unavailable or to enhance seasonal variety
- Accurately follow recipes and portion guidelines while ensuring efficient use of ingredients
- Set up and break down stations efficiently and maintain appropriate stock levels during service
- Ensure proper food handling and safety practices, including routine sanitizing, temperature tracking, and safe equipment use
- Perform regular cleaning and basic maintenance of kitchen and pastry equipment
- Support staff meals, special events, and additional kitchen needs as assigned
- Contribute to daily team communication through verbal check-ins and written documentation such as prep lists and journals
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a Pastry Chef, Pastry Baker, or in a similar high-volume kitchen role
- Strong foundational culinary skills with a commitment to consistency, attention to detail, and excellence in pastry preparation
- Proven leadership and team-building abilities, with experience mentoring and motivating staff in a fast-paced environment
- Passion for food and hospitality, focused on delivering high-quality guest experiences
- Self-motivated, proactive, and adaptable to changing priorities while maintaining organization under pressure
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative and solution-oriented mindset
- High standards of cleanliness, organization, and professionalism in all areas of work
- Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices, including compliance with state regulations
- Experience with standard kitchen equipment and familiarity with basic maintenance and safety protocols
- Ability to manage inventory, purchasing, and basic kitchen administration (preferred)
- Physically capable of standing or walking for extended periods, lifting and moving up to 50 pounds, and working in a range of indoor and outdoor conditions
- Punctual, dependable, and consistently prepared for shifts
Compensation
The expected salary range for this position is $65,000-75,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications. Relocation assistance is also available for candidates who will need it.
