Company description
Our Story: A Vision of Radical Welcome The story of the Village Exchange Center begins with a pivotal question. In 2016, St. Matthew Lutheran Church, like many congregations, saw its numbers shrinking while the community around it was rapidly changing and diversifying. The neighborhood was welcoming new families from across the globe, and the church faced a choice: turn inward, or turn outward. A new path was envisioned by co-founders Amanda Blaurock, an international lawyer, and her stepfather, Pastor Marcel Narucki. They proposed a radical transformation: to turn the church’s mission outward, leveraging its physical space to create a brand-new organization—one that would provide responsive programs and a true place of belonging for the very communities that now called the area home. Inspired by this vision of radical welcome, the congregation took a historic leap of faith. In March 2017, they voted unanimously to donate their entire building and grounds to establish the Village Exchange Center, an independent community center dedicated to celebrating and serving everyone. From this single, generous act, VEC was born. It was founded not just to manage the challenges of a changing city, but to harness the incredible strength, culture, and resilience of all its residents, both new and long-standing.
