The CCE Sullivan Beginner Farmer Program supports new and aspiring farmers in building successful, sustainable agricultural businesses. Through hands-on education, workshops, and one-on-one technical assistance, the program helps participants develop essential skills in farm production, business planning, marketing, and regulatory compliance. It also features a mentorship program that connects beginning farmers with experienced producers, fostering peer learning, problem-solving, and strong local farm networks. Job description
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Sullivan County is seeking a knowledgeable and community-focused professional to lead its Beginner Farmer Program. This position plays a key role in strengthening the region’s agricultural economy by supporting new and aspiring farmers with the skills, resources, and connections needed to build viable, sustainable farm businesses.
The Beginner Farmer Educator develops, delivers, and evaluates educational programming tailored to the needs of beginning farmers. This includes workshops, trainings, and hands-on learning opportunities covering topics such as farm production practices, business planning, marketing and distribution, workforce development, and regulatory and food safety requirements. The educator also provides individualized technical assistance and serves as a trusted resource to help farmers navigate challenges and grow their operations.
A central component of this role is leading and growing a comprehensive farmer mentorship program. The educator is responsible for recruiting and supporting experienced farmer mentors, designing and delivering mentor and mentee training, and thoughtfully matching participants based on goals, experience, and production interests. The role includes establishing clear expectations and communication practices, facilitating strong mentor–mentee relationships, and supporting participants in goal setting, skill development, and problem-solving. Ongoing responsibilities include coordinating check-ins, monitoring progress, addressing challenges, and fostering meaningful peer-to-peer learning that builds confidence and capacity among beginning farmers. The mentorship program also strengthens local farmer networks and encourages long-term collaboration within the agricultural community.
This position works closely with community partners, agricultural agencies, and service providers to expand access to land, capital, markets, and other critical resources. Additional responsibilities include outreach and communications, program planning and logistics, budget and grant management, and collecting and reporting data to support program evaluation and funding requirements. The educator also contributes to applied research and continuous improvement efforts aligned with program goals.

Compensation
this position is: hourly, $20/hr +
