Queens County Farm Museum is one of the longest continually farmed sites in New York State, dating back to 1697. Queens Farm serves as a vital and rare resource connecting people to agriculture and the environment in New York City. The 47-acre historic site is a leader in locally grown food and the ecological well-being of New York City. The farm uses Certified Naturally Grown methods to grow fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers on 4 acres of land, in addition to a 3-acre corn maze. The farm’s livestock program consists of several hundred laying hens, nine sheep, four goats, three alpacas, two steer, and two pigs. The farm is also host to a large apiary.
Job description
The Farmstand Staff will oversee day-to-day farmstand operations. This position plays a large role in promoting Queens Farm, including the produce it grows. As a public face of the organization, this position requires an upbeat attitude, patience, people skills, and a passion for food & farming.
Responsibilities:
-Setting up, restocking, staffing, and breaking down the farmstand
-Interacting with customers as a representative of Queens Farm
-Communicate information and farmstand needs with the farm manager
-Recordkeeping and data collection
-Cooking demonstrations (such as grilling or cutting up fresh produce for sampling)
-Help maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment
Other related duties as needed
Qualifications:
-Ability to lift 50lbs and stand for long periods of time in all weather conditions
-Ability to work well in a team, take direction, seek feedback, and stay on task independently
-Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
-Passion for food, farming, and knowledge about produce preferred
Prior Farmers’ Market or retail experience preferred
Compensation
this position is: hourly, $20/hr +
