Job description
About the position
The Education Associate is a part-time, temporary position for summer and fall of 2026. The Education Associate will be responsible for leading field trips for kids of all ages on our Northside and Powhatan farm sites. Field trip programming covers a variety of environmental and social science topics that complement Virginia’s SOLs. When not leading, preparing for or cleaning up from field trips, the Education Associate will help lead small groups of volunteers in seasonal farm work, give tours of the farm and assist with email communications and data entry related to student and volunteer visitation. The ideal candidate would be able to work the following schedule from July 6 November 15: Mon-Thurs from 8am-1pm. There is a possibility for this or a similar role to continue beyond the 2026 season.

Field Trip Education
Lead engaging, age-appropriate field trips that connect students to food, farming, and environmental science.
Volunteer Facilitation
Guide small groups of volunteers in meaningful, hands-on seasonal farm work.

Supervisor check-ins, staff meetings, cross-departmental opportunities, and other related assignments as necessary.
Detail:
Field Trip Education
● Lead field trips for students of all ages at Shalom Farms' Northside and Powhatan farm sites.
● Facilitate programming that covers environmental and social science topics aligned with Virginia's SOLs.
● Prepare materials and set up learning environments before each field trip; clean up and reset afterward.
● Adapt facilitation style and content to meet the needs of diverse groups across age, background, and learning level.
● Give farm tours that reflect Shalom Farms' values and spark curiosity about food justice and sustainable agriculture.
Volunteer Facilitation
● Lead small groups of volunteers in seasonal farm tasks, providing clear instruction and a welcoming experience.
● Engage volunteers in ways that reflect Shalom Farms' values and build community.
Other
● Assist with email communications related to student and volunteer visitation.
● Support data entry and record-keeping for field trip and volunteer programming.
● Attend relevant staff meetings, trainings, and cross-departmental opportunities.
● Regular check-ins with supervisor, including a mid-season review.
● Other related assignments as necessary.
Compensation
this position is: hourly, $20/hr +
