Michigan State University (MSU) Extension helps improve lives by bringing the university’s knowledge and resources directly to individuals, communities, and businesses across the state. For more than a century, MSU Extension has supported Michigan’s economy and communities by providing education that strengthens families, builds resilient communities, and prepares youth for future success. Bowers Farm at Discovery Oaks advances this mission as part of Oakland County Parks’ Food, Farm, and Managed Landscapes initiative, a key pillar of Mission 26 focused on creating equitable, sustainable, and community-centered park spaces through working agricultural landscapes.
The Livestock Coordinator with MSU Extension’s Community, Food and Environment Institute (CFEI) supports the daily operations of Bowers Farm at Discovery Oaks, an 84-acre educational farm operated through a partnership with Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission and Bloomfield Hills Schools. In this role, you will provide operational leadership for a multi-species livestock program while contributing to animal welfare, farm production, student learning, and community engagement.
You will serve as the primary point of contact for livestock operations, overseeing animal care, health monitoring, feeding, breeding coordination, and recordkeeping. Responsibilities include maintaining farm infrastructure, managing supplies and equipment, ensuring compliance with safety and animal care standards, and supporting overall farm operations. You will also work closely with farm leadership and veterinary professionals to uphold high standards of animal health, biosecurity, and production practices.
In addition, you will support educational programming and outreach by assisting with 4-H, school programs, camps, and public events, while helping coordinate staff and volunteers.
This position requires living on-site at the farm to ensure continuous animal care, including early mornings, evenings, and emergency response, supporting the farm’s role as both a working operation and a community learning environment.
