Contract Inspector - Organic & Animal Welfare Programming
EarthClaims LLC provides private, third-party verification services to clients worldwide. The Contract Inspector is a trained and qualified professional whose primary job responsibilities include on-site inspections of crop, livestock, and handling/processing operations for compliance with the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) regulations and G.A.P. animal welfare standards. EarthClaims will provide training for the G.A.P. animal welfare scope.
Contract Inspectors inspect farms, food processing operations, and livestock operations to assess compliance with USDA NOP standards and/or G.A.P. animal welfare standards. Inspections include making observations, conducting interviews with operators and staff, auditing records, collecting samples, and writing detailed reports for EarthClaims to determine if an operation complies with the applicable standards.
The Contract Inspector role is a remote position with travel. The role requires excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills including the ability to present complex material to various audiences. Professional, accurate, and impartial inspection work is critical to the delivery of quality verification services.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of 2,000 hours of experience and/or education in agriculture, food processing, livestock management, and/or organic industry. Experience may be in one or more scopes: crops, processing, and/or livestock/poultry.
- Minimum of 50 hours of organic inspection experience and/or training, including field training. Experience conducting NOP Livestock inspection highly preferred.
- Completion of the IOIA Basic Inspection Course(s) in the applicable scopes of Crops, Processing, and/or Livestock, or a comparable training program, is required. EarthClaims will provide G.A.P. animal welfare auditor training.
- Familiarity with the USDA National Organic Program regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a customer-oriented environment and deliver certification services with precision, impartiality, and professionalism.
- Attention to detail, organization, communication skills, and timely completion of assignments.
- Proven record of excellent communication skills – verbal and written.
- Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize work.
- Ability to learn and understand complex program standards.
- Proficiency in MS Office (MS Excel and Word, in particular).
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience working with agricultural producers.
- Experience with beef, pigs, broiler chicken, or turkey production systems.
- Experience in farming/ranching and food distribution.
- A bachelor’s degree in a related field (agriculture, animal science, food science, environmental science, or similar) is preferred; negotiable depending on experience.
- Prior experience conducting G.A.P. animal welfare audits is a plus but not required; EarthClaims will provide training.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of National Organic Program (NOP) regulations, G.A.P. animal welfare standards, and any clarifications provided by the USDA or G.A.P.
- Scheduling travel with EarthClaims clients and conducting travel as required.
- Writing timely, detailed, and objective inspection reports.
- Providing timely feedback to EarthClaims on questions specific to standards and client concerns.
- Interacting with clients in a professional, confident, and impartial manner.
- Meeting with clients to inspect farms, processing facilities, and livestock operations.
- Making observations and auditing farming, production, and animal welfare records.
- Submitting samples of organic crop/products for laboratory analysis as required.
- Attending trainings to maintain qualification to conduct organic and animal welfare audits; maintaining training records.
Work Requirements:
- The Contract Inspector is a fully remote position that requires frequent overnight travel up to 75% of the time, with the ability to travel by car and plane.
- Must be able to stand or walk for extended periods of time.
- Must have their own computer, internet access, and the ability to take photos.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and make travel arrangements as required to inspect certified operations.
- Must be able to carry up to 20 lbs. of equipment, possibly on steep or rough terrain.
- Work environments while inspecting may include open agricultural fields and orchards; livestock barns, pens, and pastures; moving tractors, farm machinery, and processing equipment; pesticide and chemical storage facilities; and temperature extremes of heat or cold.
Compensation:
EarthClaims offers competitive pay. The pay range is $50–$70/hour, based on qualifications, experience, and quality of deliverables. Direct travel expenses are reimbursed, including personal vehicle mileage at the current IRS rate.
