18 Reasons is a nonprofit that increases food security through the power of home cooking. Our mission is to empower our community with the confidence and creativity needed to buy, cook, and eat good food every day. We offer food education programs to the community through two different channels. Through our free Community Programs, we offer grocery donations paired with free cooking and nutrition classes to families on a limited budget throughout the Bay Area. At our 18th Street Kitchen in San Francisco, paid classes reach curious home cooks with the means to pay for instruction. Our vision is to create equity and belonging through the transformative and healing power of home cooking.
The Program Manager is responsible for all areas of program management for the free community programs offered within San Francisco county, including the recruitment and management of program staff, volunteers, and independent contractors (Peer Health Educators), collaboration with community partners, scheduling of programs, program evaluation, office administration, and adding program value.
Job description
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following tasks:
Program Management
Outreach to potential new host site partners to expand programming
Onboard new site partners: respond to host site application inquiries, meet new host site partners, establish partnership agreements, troubleshoot partnerships, maintain existing relationships with community partners
Work with new and existing community partners to schedule programs and carry out shared expectations and responsibilities for hosting a course
Seek out support for programming through cost-share contributions
Collaborate with supervisor to develop and execute new community programs
Ensure program grant deliverables are attained within the county
Community Partnership Outreach/Engagement
Market Community Programs in the county to build awareness, credibility, and demand
Contribute content for communications about the program, such as newsletters, social media posts, and annual reports
Networking: attend networking meetings and present about 18 Reasons, when applicable
Manage Program Staff
Supervise all program staff working in the county you oversee (including Assistant Program Managers, Program Coordinators, occasionally interns, and Peer Health Educators)
Serve as a member of the Community Programs leadership team (including reporting and tracking for weekly L10s, and thirdly and annual planning sessions)
Oversee the Peer Health Educator program within your county (schedule, train, and manage communication with PHEs working within your county)
Contribute to the overall culture and business growth using our Culture Guide as a tool for self-reflection and an ongoing commitment to self-growth, the growth in others, and the growth of the company
Contribute to the overall culture and business growth by participating in or leading improvement committees and projects when needed
Program Coordination
Manage communications with Cooking Matters teaching team; including host site agency staff, CM instructors, Peer Health Educators and volunteers
Collect and prepare materials for classes, including food, equipment, and course paperwork
Secure and manage resources needed for program delivery, including groceries, wholesale food orders, and other program materials
Complete program evaluation and other program reporting documentation as needed
Assist with the development of materials, including training, course, and curricula development
Administrative Duties
Maintain all program materials, inventory, databases, records, and files
Manage training and communication with volunteers; maintain updated volunteer opportunities, engage volunteers via newsletters, and staff classes with volunteers.
Assist in the preparation of reports required by funding sources and monitor the data collected to ensure accuracy and compliance
Maintain updated program calendar, website, and tracking sheets with scheduled courses schedule and other program-related events
Participate in department, and agency meetings and in-person, web conference and overnight trainings as required
Participate in department-wide budget planning and oversee financial resources involved in San Francisco program delivery
Manage and maintain office supply inventory
Qualifications:
Knowledge of nutrition and food education
Passionate about food, food justice, and racial equity
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
Excellent organizational skills, proven ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks, and to meet deadlines
Experience, willingness, and ability to work with people from a variety of racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds, with various lifestyles, sexual orientations, and of all ages, including professional chefs, social service providers, volunteers, and low-income participants
Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends for the purposes of attending community meetings
Valid driver’s license and a car you can use for work
Strongly preferred: Fluent or conversant in Spanish
Strongly preferred: Prior experience managing programs and staff
Physical requirements:
This position requires being on your feet 20% of the time, driving 10% of the time, and working in an office setting 70% of the time. While in the field, frequent lifting, moving, or carrying supplies up to 50 pounds, including use of stairs, is required. General office duties include: computer work, filing, phone communication, copying. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable any qualified person to perform the essential job duties.
Classification & Compensation:
This is a full time, salaried position. 18 Reasons has an equitable and transparent compensation policy; we do not negotiate salaries. To read more about our compensation philosophy, click here. The salary will be set by the level of experience the candidate has in a similar position (Manager level or above)
Tier 1 (0-2 years experience)$86,000
Tier 2 (3-5 years experience)$90,000
Tier 3 (6+ years experience) $94,000

*Designated staff may rotate completing essential time-sensitive duties during closure weeks and will take corresponding Flex Time
