Role Overview
This role is intended to help create and maintain reliable daily farm systems so the farm’s core operations do not depend solely on the owner. The Farm Operations Lead will help manage recurring garden, livestock, grazing, groundskeeping, maintenance, and volunteer-related needs.
This is not primarily an events, marketing, bookkeeping, or administrative role. It is a hands-on farm operations role.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include:
- Garden care, including harvesting, flipping beds, replanting, fertilizing, weeding, watering, trellising, pruning, and crop maintenance
- Animal care, including feeding, watering, observing animal health, assisting with basic doctoring, moving animals, and supporting humane handling
- Rotational grazing support, including setting up and moving temporary electric fencing, moving animals between grazing areas, and supporting pasture systems
- Groundskeeping and maintenance, including mowing, fence repair, barn or shed repairs, basic carpentry, tool organization, and general property upkeep
- Volunteer or helper coordination, including communicating tasks, helping organize workdays, supporting safe work, and communicating progress or issues
- Additional farm support, which may include animal sales, animal transport, or processor drop-offs as agreed
Physical Requirements
- Applicants should be able to:
- Work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, mud, and normal farm conditions
- Perform physically demanding farm tasks safely
- Lift up to 100 pounds
- Safely handle animals, tools, fencing, feed bags, and basic farm equipment
- Stand, bend, kneel, carry, shovel, rake, walk, and lift for extended periods
Preferred Experience
Experience in one or more of the following areas is strongly preferred:
- Small farm operations
- Market gardening, vegetable production, or flower farming
- Livestock care
- Rotational grazing
- Electric fencing
- Groundskeeping or landscaping
- Basic carpentry or repair work
- Farm tools and equipment
- Volunteer, crew, or team coordination
- Homesteading, nursery, agricultural, or outdoor operations work
Ideal Fit
The ideal person is reliable, consistent, calm around animals, comfortable with physical labor, observant, proactive, organized, practical, safety-conscious, and a clear communicator. They should be able to recognize priorities, complete tasks without constant supervision, adapt to changing farm needs, and respect the animals, land, tools, and people involved in the work.
Schedule and Compensation
This is an independent contractor role expected to average 30+ hours per week. The ideal schedule is approximately 4–6 hours per day, with the possibility of expanding up to 8 hours per day depending on experience, availability, and farm needs.
Some weekend availability may be required depending on animal care, garden priorities, harvest windows, weather, and seasonal demands.
Pay is $22/hour depending on experience, availability, and skill set.
