Job description
OVERVIEW
TFBB is hiring for an Evening and Weekend Baker (Baker) to assistant in the preparation and production of baked goods for sale, including measuring and mixing ingredients for cakes, cookies, and other pastries, rolling, cutting, and filling pastry sheets for homemade pop tarts, mixing and tending to sourdough, baking and finishing pastries for sale, and working collaboratively to develop and execute new recipes inspired by local and seasonal ingredients. The Baker will also support day-to-day kitchen operations including cleaning and dishwashing, assist with inventory management, follow all safety and sanitation procedures, and other logistical duties. The Baker will also be responsible for greeting and helping customers as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Measure and mix ingredients for an assortment of cookies, cakes, fillings and icings, sourdough focaccia, and other pastries, as well as jams, syrups, and prepared food items;
- Follow established recipes and production processes with accuracy to maintain consistency and quality;
- Operate dough sheeter to roll out and cut sheets of pastry with precision and care;
- Assist with all stages of sourdough, including mixing, bulk fermentation, shaping, proofing, and baking as well as maintenance of sourdough starter;
- Assist with preparation of ingredients, including cleaning produce, peeling, chopping, and processing;
- Assist with fulfillment of custom cake orders, including preparing cakes, fillings, and icings from scratch; filling, crumb coating, and icing cakes, and decorating.
- Assist with inventory management, including tracking stock, inspecting deliveries, and restocking;
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including washing dishes, sanitizing surfaces, and sweeping and mopping floors;
- Follow all safety and sanitation procedures, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and handling food in a safe and hygienic manner;
- Provide excellent customer service by greeting customers, answering questions, and fulfilling orders.
REQUIREMENTS
- 1-3 years of experience in a bakery or food service environment preferred;
- Excellent attention to detail, solid communicator, and excellent time management;
- Effective problem solver and ability to come up with solutions;
- Ability to mix large volumes of batters and doughs;
- Ability to perform fundamental baking techniques (e.g., rolling pie crust, mixing, handling equipment, cake decorating, sourdough maintenance, etc.);
- Ability to execute a recipe from start to finish;
- Ability to keep a clean workspace and follow all safety and sanitation procedures;
- Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) in New York State preferred; if certification has not been obtained prior to applying, this is to be completed within the first 3 weeks of employment and will be paid for by TFBB.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to work evening and some early morning shifts and stand for extended periods of time;
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION
- $20/hour plus tips;
- Accrued paid sick leave;
- 30% employee discount plus free coffee, tea, and pastries on shift;
- Flexible schedule; evening (approximately 4pm-9pm or later) and Sunday morning shifts required.
