Company description
Farmer and the Bell is a scratch bakery and café in Woodstock, Vermont, where the kitchen is the heart of the experience. We make nearly everything ourselves, with a focus on thoughtfully sourced ingredients, seasonal cooking, and strong relationships with local farmers and makers whenever we can.
Our food is rooted in the kind of cooking we love to eat: beautiful, carefully made pastries, house-made breads, and a breakfast program that goes well beyond the ordinary. Breakfast burritos, sandwiches, French crullers, and an evolving selection of pastries are made in-house and served fresh throughout the day. Our open kitchen puts the craft behind the food front and center, giving our team the opportunity to take real pride in what they make.
We’re building more than a bakery. We’re building a small, independent food business that values craftsmanship, hospitality, creativity, local relationships, and the people who make it all happen. We want Farmer and the Bell to be a place where people care deeply about the food they produce, enjoy working alongside one another, and feel connected to the community they’re serving.
Job description
Café Associate — Full Time
About the Role
At Farmer and the Bell, everyone is part of the food experience. As a Café Associate, you'll be one of the first people our guests meet and an important part of connecting them with the food coming out of our open kitchen.
This is a hands-on, fast-paced role that goes well beyond taking orders. You'll make drinks, assemble breakfast and lunch orders, talk with guests, keep the café running smoothly, and jump into the kitchen when needed. You'll work alongside our bakers, cooks, and café team in an environment where everyone pitches in and everyone has something to teach.
We're a teaching kitchen, and we want our team to feel inspired by the work they're doing. If you're interested in learning more about baking, pastry, bread, cooking, or other areas of the kitchen, there is room to grow. We've built our team so that people can develop new skills and explore where their interests take them.
What You'll Do
Welcome guests and create a warm, genuine hospitality experience.
Take orders and help guests navigate our menu with confidence.
Make coffee and other beverages to our standards.
Assemble breakfast and lunch orders with care and attention to detail.
Keep pastry and food displays stocked, organized, and beautiful.
Help with basic kitchen prep and finishing work.
Keep the café, service areas, and kitchen clean, organized, and food-safe.
Communicate closely with the kitchen and bakery teams to keep service moving.
Jump in wherever you're needed—especially during busy service.
Learn our food, ingredients, recipes, and systems so you can confidently answer guest questions.
Contribute ideas and help us continually improve how we work.
What We're Looking For
You don't need years of restaurant experience to be successful here. We care more about your attitude, curiosity, reliability, and willingness to learn.
We're looking for someone who:
Loves food and enjoys learning how things are made.
Takes pride in doing things well, even when things get busy.
Is genuinely friendly and enjoys taking care of people.
Communicates clearly and works well as part of a team.
Can stay organized and calm during a busy breakfast rush.
Is willing to jump between front-of-house and kitchen tasks.
Has an eye for detail and cares about presentation.
Is dependable, accountable, and willing to learn from feedback.
Brings positive energy and contributes to a respectful, supportive workplace.
Is curious about baking or cooking and excited by the opportunity to learn new skills.
Restaurant or café experience is helpful, but it isn't required. If you have a great attitude and want to learn, we're interested in meeting you.
Compensation & Benefits
$18+/hour, depending on experience
Equal tip share among all staff — everyone participates equally in the tips earned by the team.
Supplemental health, dental, and vision insurance
Free shift meal
Opportunities to learn baking, pastry, bread, cooking, and other kitchen skills
Opportunities for growth within the kitchen and café
A supportive, collaborative team in a beautiful open-kitchen environment
Why Farmer and the Bell?
We're building more than a bakery. We're building a place where people can take their work seriously without taking themselves too seriously.
Our kitchen is open to our guests, our team is encouraged to learn from one another, and we want people to leave a shift having learned something new. If you've ever thought, “I'd love to learn how to bake,” or “I'd like to understand more about how a professional kitchen works,” this is a place where you can actually do that.
We care deeply about the food we make, the ingredients we use, the guests we serve, and the people we work alongside. If you want to be part of a growing independent bakery and café where curiosity, craftsmanship, hospitality, and teamwork matter, we'd love to meet you.
Come learn with us.
